Dealing With Personal Problems in School

At the start of this semester, I began to experience a personal struggle that has encompassed all areas of my life. It has been difficult, and one of the most difficult parts about it has been trying to balance what has been happening with my schoolwork, and maintaining my grades.

I just wanted to come on here and make a post about how to handle these types of personal problems while trying to manage work, because I know that this can be extremely difficult to accomplish.

1) Try to channel some of the emotions you are feeling into your work - Despite the fact that this is extremely difficult, the best way to get yourself through adversity is by looking it in the eye and throwing success right back at it. If you feel that somebody has hurt you, or the universe has wronged you, the best revenge is ALWAYS success. And it's really hard to find motivation to get there sometimes, but just remember how good you will feel when you get there, and use that to motivate you. Getting an A on my first test this semester was definitely a positive for me and has made me even more driven to finding success.

2) Have a support system that you can turn to - This is so important. It's not only important to have a support system, but also to be a support system. I'm always surprised by how many people are willing to be there for me and care about me when I need them. When I call on others for help, they show me time and time again that they will be there for me and love me no matter what. And I try and do the same for them. Having this gets you through, motivates you, gives you clarity, advice and love. Don't be afraid to rely on others when you need to. And be there for them when they need to rely on you.

3) Set aside time each day to do something you enjoy - For me, I always tried to reward myself at the end of each day's work, because I know the importance of having something to look forward to and enjoy. Now, I try to do so even more. Having something to look forward to, and pursuing new opportunities will make you so fulfilled about yourself. Even if your reward is just trying a new flavor of coffee, or something as big as going out for a fun time with friends, this will get you through this.

4) Find a community that makes you better - For me, it's church. I learn so much about how I need to grow as a person and make myself better each day because of my church and faith community. Find people that are part of this community with you that will keep you accountable towards your growth. Allow others to speak to your heart and provide you with the strength that you need in order to become the best version of yourself that you can be. When you allow struggle to define you, that's when you fall. When you allow it to reshape you into a stronger person, that's when you'll grow.

5) Get professional help if you need it - Don't wait, and let the struggles that you are going through allow your work to slip. If you feel that there is even a chance of doing so, please seek professional help. Most universities provide free or discounted counseling, and even high schools and middle schools will have people there to provide support when needed. If not, look to see what types of services would be available to you through your insurance and what types of services would be affordable to you. Three is something out there for you, I promise.

All in all, just remember that it will get better. Someday, there will be peace, but you have to work through the pain to get there. Work though it, but don't let it define you.
