Study Mindset

As a medical student, there is lots of Studying to do, and unfortunately sometimes there isn't a lot of motivation to do it. Losing even an hour can be absolutely crucial to not only your test scores,  but also your knowledge of the Material. But, I think that one of the most crucial mistakes that people make when they try to Study is think that their understanding of the material is purely reflective of the amount of time they spend trying to learn it. This just quite frankly isn't true.

Your understanding of the material is directly tied into your frame of mind as you study, and the way that you are attempting to process the material. If you are disinterested in the material you're trying to learn, lack motivation and aren't focused, you can spend all day looking at material and quite frankly, nothing will happen. Also, if you're stressed out, and you're studying in that frame of mind, you will likewise not get anything done.

The key mindset to go into studying with is the mindset of eagerness and willingness to learn, and a calm relaxed outlook. Over the next few weeks, I'll be doing a series about study mindset, and the way you should approach studying mentally. I'll give you tips to make sure that when you're studying, you're as productive as you can possibly be. But, for those that want something quick, here's the cliff notes version.

1) If you're not inherently interested in the material, make it interesting. This may sound somewhat dumb. Most people just think that if something's boring, it's boring. But quite frankly, as a student, it's your job to get interested in the material. If you're in the right field for you, you'll definitely be interested in something you do. But regardless, that doesn't mean that everything you learn about will appeal to you. Find a way to connect something you love to something you're learning.

2) Take breaks. People say this a lot, and it can definitely sound counterproductive at times. Why would you stop studying if you're trying to study? Well, the short answer is, if you're trying to marathon study for 8 hours, you're going to burn yourself out by the end of it. And even if you do manage to focus for that time, there's a good change that all the material you just shoved into your head won't stick that well the second you look away from it to start doing something else.

3) Change it up. Perhaps you really like studying at that one table in the library, or maybe in your bedroom. Perhaps it's that one coffee shop. But studies have shown that it's good to change scenery between study sessions in order to help better recall information. Perhaps go to a coffee shop every so often if you're a library studier, or vice versa. Try studying at home one day if you normally don't (although it's important to only study at home if you're good at limiting distractions). You don't have to get rid of your favorite spot to study, it can still be your main spot. But just make a change every so often.

4) Reward yourself. It's important to make sure that you reward yourself for a job well done. But also make sure to only reward yourself for a job well done. If you want to go to the movies after you're done studying for your quiz, then only go to the movie if you have studied properly for your quiz. It's important to have things in the short term that help you achieve your long term goals, because sometimes it is easy to lose sight of them.
