How to transform a skirt into a kimono?

Open up your wardrobe,I’m sure you’ll find in some old skirts that either don’t fit you anymore or are way out of your style. What if they can be transformed into a kimono cardigan? They’ll make a beautiful Fabric that could be paired with your outfits adding a chic look to it.

So, gather around your printed or plain skirts, a pair of scissors and let’s get started.

#1

Cut along the Elastic upper (circular) part of your skirt. If you’re okay with the elastic or if it is loose enough then you don’t need to cut it. Also, if the fabric of your skirt falls apart after cutting, then do not cut it.

#2

Now, lay down your skirt on a flat surface so as to understand how to wear it.

#3

Put both of your hands through the loophole that you just cut, or the upper elastic part like you do with a vest or any cardigan. If you feel that the elastic is too tight, then loosen it by stretching it or by washing it with hot water. Else, simply cut the elastic off.

#4

You have made a beautiful kimono cardigan. It’s a perfect piece to add in a layer for a windy day out. A flap of the skirt fabric itself covers the back of the dress hiding the elastic border or the cut opening so don’t worry if you can’t cut the fabric perfectly, you don’t have to sew or fold-stick the borders. However, if you are more into the perfection, you can always do that.

I’ve experimented this with two of my old skirts and it has worked out amazingly (without cutting off the elastic).

If you recreate any of these looks don’t forget to share your pictures with me on Instagram, Pinterest or other social media. You’ll find links to my profile on my page itself.

Thank you!
