Healthy Skin Comes from the Inside

Tags: skin food diet

Whether we like it or not, this cliché of a phrase isn’t going anywhere, especially now when we have a growing number of choices on our beauty shelves, so it gets very easy to forget the essence of beauty. The harsh truth is that there is no antioxidant-packed lotion in this world that can undo the damage of poor Diet decisions, so the sooner you begin cherishing your complexion from within, the better your chances are of safeguarding your glow.

We’re still in the earliest stages of 2018, and now would be a perfect time for you to revamp your skincare and focus on the aspects of your appetite that help protect and nourish your natural beauty!

Green is always in

It’s no coincidence that a plant-based diet is becoming increasingly popular all over the world, and although the inspiration may come from various sources (saving the environment, healing nutritional deficiencies and the like), plants are also a wonderful choice for your skin. They are the prebiotics your gut flora loves, they are rich in vitamins and minerals that boost your immune system, and they provide protection from free radical damage and serve as natural detoxing agents.

At the risk of sounding like a cheesy commercial – but wait, there’s more! Greens are also responsible for proper collagen production (alongside lean protein), and some of them increase your skin’s natural potential to ward off the sun’s harmful rays. Think: broccoli, carrots, lettuce, kale, pumpkins, peppers, spinach, tomatoes, as well as nuts and seeds of all sorts.

Cut down on your processed menu

Or, even better, eliminate processed foods and sugars entirely from your diet, for good. The more processed your foods are, the greater the chances of consuming more chemicals, artificial flavor enhancers and synthetic dyes that are common ingredients used in the Food industry.

Sugar is one of the main culprits of many skin issues, from acne, blemishes, frequent breakouts, to sensitivity and irritation, and as such, it doesn’t deserve to be in the diet for those who appreciate their skin. If you want even skin tone, no annoying zits and pimples, make sure you switch to skin-friendly alternatives such as stevia or honey.

Amp up your micronutrients

There’s a great focus nowadays on balancing your macronutrient intake, especially if you’re looking to shed a few pounds or build more lean muscle, but most people neglect to take care of their micronutrient needs. Anti-oxidants such as vitamins A, C and E are among some of the most powerful ingredients in your diet that can help your skin heal, produce collagen and get rid of toxins.

Since very few of us actually manage to get our daily dose of micros through food, supplements have become available in many shapes and forms, so you can even find quality vitamins online and ensure that your daily diet is packed with the right goodies for your skin.

Keep your gut happy

Since about 70% of your immune system is located in your gut, and our skin always reflects all of our health issues, it’s only natural that when your gut isn’t happy, your complexion suffers. And a happy gut calls for a greater probiotic intake, which can be introduced through fermented foods and cultured foods.

Consider adding kefir, yoghurt, kimchi and similar friendly bacteria-loaded treats into your diet, while taking a probiotic supplement is often advised to those who suffer from severe acne, in order to restore balance to your gut.

Don’t skimp on water

When it comes to helping your skin stay elastic, plump and supple, there’s nothing quite like water that will achieve this effect. And don’t use that vague “eight glasses per day” guideline, simply because every person leads a different lifestyle, and you should assess your water intake accordingly.

If you take part in a physical activity (which you absolutely should), or spend plenty of time outside and in the sun, for instance, you will likely need to drink more than an average sedentary individual who spends most of their time in an office.

Make sure that your menu is packed with healthy foods and proper hydration, and your skin will become a reflection of those healthy choices, keeping your complexion beautiful and blemish-free for years to come!
