Underwear From the ‘Human Panda’

Eddie Huang has done a lot in his life so far, but nobody ever pegged him for an underwear Model.

Which is exactly why he agreed to front a new style and promo campaign for the online lifestyle brand Meundies.

Huang, 35, is a self-created comic, restaurateur, TV host and source material for Fresh Off The Boat, the TV sitcom based on his bestselling autobiography.

But the disruptive Asian-American prefers to think of himself as a ‘Human Panda’ — a chubby black, white, Asian mix —. It’s a catchy label that gives him a platform to advocate for racial diversity, body positivity and acceptance of differences, all with a sense of humor.

His new line for MeUndies, called Pandamonium, features a cute black-and-white panda print that is available in all of the company’s men’s and women’s underwear.

“With this collaboration, MeUndies is hoping to echo Eddie’s stance on self-acceptance and embracing the difference in others,” the five-year-old startup said about the new collection. “[Eddie] is always looking to shake things up, change people’s perceptions, and maybe make a few people laugh along the way.”

Huang is the quick to tackle racial stereotypes about Asian Americans whenever possible — including clichés about Asian penises in a recent interview.

The Pandamonium collection, though, gives him a chance to address another issue — the dearth of Asian male models in American fashion.

“As Asian dudes, we never see Asian models. Especially male Asian models. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one,” he said in an interview published in HighSnobiety.

Acceptance of different body types, especially those that don’t look like professional models, is also at the heart of this campaign.

“Body positivity is something that even I was a little hesitant and insecure about,” he said. “I talk about my face and my skin in Fresh Off the Boat. I talk about some of the insecurities with physical self-image, but during this campaign I actually talk about it more than I ever have.

#I honestly never thought I’d do an underwear campaign—I never thought I’d be asked. And I never thought that people would be like, ‘That was great!’ … I mean, it is funny, but no one expected me to be doing this.”

The new MeUndies campaign launched yesterday and went viral on social media almost instantly. Grab them while you can, at $18-24 per piece.

And check out the MeUndies site to see more of Eddie Huang modeling his namesake styles — though just the men’s version.
