Up-and-coming songstresses Mafalda and Cailin Russo are definitely making waves in the Music scene. Mafalda – who honed her singing skills through intensive voice lessons at the prestigious Berklee College of Music – recently launched her debut EP, while Cailin just performed at Lollapalooza, one of the world’s most renowned music festivals, with her eponymous band ‘Russo’.

Their steady rise as musicians is mirrored by their growing popularity on social media, where they regularly post updates about new music, upcoming tour dates and stylish OOTDs. Young, creative and talented, the duo’s cool and unique personal styles have put them on the fashion radar. We caught up with the artists in sunny California, where they styled our latest collection with panache.

Before being a solo artist, you formed your eponymous band ‘RUSSO’ in 2018. How has the transition from being in a group to working on your own been like?

Separating the band from solo stuff has been great. The music and I are evolving and I am confident with the direction we are taking. I obviously love the guys and will continue to play with them. It is challenging to write songs alone, but I do have stories to tell and I am embracing it. I will still write with the RUSSO guys. The best thing about writing music is when you crack the song.

You were a model before deciding to concentrate on your music. Why did you decide to make that switch?

I made the switch from modelling to music because I had to make a decision about what to focus my time on. I needed to draw a line in the sand and fully commit to one or the other. Eventually, they would blend.

How will you describe your personal style? Do you dress differently on and off stage?

I actually just asked my best friend how she would describe my personal style, and our mutual answer is “eccentric”. However, she followed “eccentric” with “grandma” while I added “sexy” before “eccentric”.

Eccentricity is definitely a key theme of my personal style, I believe. I am very mood-based with how I dress. I dress differently on stage for sure. Not too different, but I will say I add just a little sparkle to my regular style.

We love how you have styled the bags and shoes from our Fall 2019 collection. What do you think of the collection and which is your favorite piece?

Firstly, thank you for the lovely accessories! My favorite piece is the picnic basket bag and snakeskin print sandals – always a fan of (faux) snakeskin on my feet.

Are there any milestones – in both your career and personal life – that you are looking forward to achieving in the near future?

I think that the last year was a huge pivotal moment for me. From touring to my personal life, I learned so much about art and myself. As for recent milestones, I will say playing at Lollapalooza was a big one. It was a bittersweet, super fun time.

You have lived in both London and New York City. What is unique about the music scenes in both cities? Is there anything in particular that you love about them, aside from the music?

Both cities are very special to me. I love the vibrant energy in New York City, particularly in its music scene. There are always interesting shows on any given night, and it does not hurt that it takes five minutes to walk from one iconic venue to the next – for instance, from Webster Hall to the Public Theater on Lafayette. London, on the other hand, has a much more laid-back vibe. It is home for me, and I find that my best writing happens in that city!

What made you decide to create music with your own voice?

For me, creating music is a very personal experience, even when I am collaborating with others. I started writing as a way to find my own voice, and I love being able to perform the songs that I write. I just released my debut EP called "Daisy Chain", and I'm excited to be performing it over the next few months in cities like Los Angeles, Madrid, Barcelona, and Florence.

How will you describe your personal style – and if you are to have a fashion uniform, what would it look like?

I am not sure how I will describe my style. What I wear on any given day tends to be a pretty accurate portrayal of my mood that morning. If I had to have a fashion uniform, it would be something comfortable. That would mean my favorite pair of jeans, a t-shirt, and white high-top sneakers.

We love the striking outfits that you have created with the bags and shoes from our Fall 2019 collection. What do you think of the collection and which is your favorite piece?

The collection is absolutely beautiful! If I had to pick, I would say my favorite piece is the boxy bucket bag.

What do you hope to achieve with your music – are there any career milestones that you hope to hit in the near future?

Creating music that people connect to is the most important thing for me – that is what it is all about. However, if I had to pick a more specific milestone, it would be to play a show in a city I have never been to – getting to perform my music in an amazing place like Singapore would be a dream!
