A Natural and Affordable Approach to Gift Giving

If you have grown tired of giving the same old presents to friends and family, or want to find a cheaper more eco-friendly alternative to the beauty products and cosmetics on the drugstore shelves, consider making your own natural beauty products.

Homemade Bath Salts

Homemade bath salts are easy to make, and when you add your own combination of coloring and scents, all stored in a beautiful glass jar, they make an affordable and thoughtful gift. Follow these easy steps and you will be on your way to a relaxing soak in the tub.

Ingredients for homemade bath salts:

  • 2 cups Epsom or Sea Salts
  • 2 – 4 drops food coloring in whatever color you like best, or you can mix two colours together
  • 2 – 4 drops lavender essential oil

Pour the salt crystals into a large bowl that won’t stain. Mix in the food coloring, drop by drop, stirring the salts thoroughly until you have the color you want.

Add two to four drops of the lavender essential oil, depending on how fragrant you want the salts to be, and mix the salt crystals thoroughly. Pour the mixture into glass jars, and let them sit for two days. Then draw yourself a hot bath and relax.

All Natural Body Scrubs

Natural boy scrubs are so easy and affordable, but feel rich and luxurious. Make them for yourself to use right away, or make a dry scrub to bottle and give as a gift. Some scrubs can be make entirely from ingredients already in your kitchen.

Invigorating Coffee Scrub

Coffee grounds are cheap and easily available, and they also make a wonderful body scrub. The caffeine in coffee is great for treating cellulite and varicose veins when applied directly to the skin, and the vanilla extract has soothing properties.

  • 2 cups coffee grounds
  • ½ cup sea salt
  • 1 tbsp. massage oil
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract

Combine all ingredients in a large bowl. Store mixture in an air tight container, or beautiful glass jar if you are giving it was a gift. Apply the scrub to damp skin while in the shower. Massage into skin in circular motions, and rinse with warm water.

Almond and Honey Scrub

  • 4 tbsp. almonds
  • 4 tsp. milk
  • 1 tsp. flour
  • 1 tsp. honey

Place almonds in a blender, and grind for 10 seconds. Add the remaining ingredients, and blend until it forms a thick paste. Rub onto skin, and rinse with warm water.

Orange and Oatmeal Dry Scrub

  • 1 cup dried orange peel
  • 1 cup almonds
  • 1 cup oatmeal

Place all ingredients in a blender, and blend until mixture forms a powder. Place in glass jar to give as a gift. When you are ready to scrub, place some of the powder in your hand, and add a few drops of warm water. Scrub onto skin gently, and rinse with warm water.

Homemade Cleansing Creams and Milks

Many homemade cleansing milks and creams generally should be used right away, and don’t have a long shelf life. Therefore make them fresh right before using them. And if you want to treat a friend, invite her over to your place for an at-home day at the spa.

Milk and Honey Cleansing Milk

It doesn’t get much easier than this, just mix one teaspoon of warm honey with one tablespoon of milk. Rub onto skin, and rinse with warm water. It’s a pure and gentle way to cleanse your skin, and the best part is you know exactly what’s in your product.

Fennel Cleansing Milk

This detoxifying recipe is perfect for oily skin. To make, simply mix a ½ cup of buttermilk with two tablespoons crushed fennel seeds. Heat the mixture in a double boiler for thirty minutes. Then remove from heat and let steep for two hours. Then simply strain the mixture, let it cool, and store it in a glass bottle. Store this cleansing milk in the fridge for up to two weeks.

Make Your Own Lip Gloss

All you need to make your own natural and affordable lip gloss is a handful of ingredients. Once you have the basic recipe down, it’s easy to add different flavors and scents to tailor your recipe to your own taste, or for the girlfriends on your gift list.

The only ingredients you will need for basic homemade lip gloss are:

  • 4 oz extra virgin olive oil
  • 3 oz beeswax
  • 1 vitamin E capsule

To make your basic homemade lip gloss melt the above three ingredients in the microwave, but be careful not to let the mixture boil. Once all the ingredients are melted, mix them together, and pour into decorative containers. Let the product sit for two days, and voila, you’ve got all natural lip gloss.

If you want to add some variety, scent, or flavor to your recipe then simply add one of these additives to the basic recipe. Try adding an ounce of lemon juice or honey. If you have a sweet tooth try adding a half teaspoon of cocoa powder, or a couple of chocolate chips to the basic recipe. Enjoy!

Whether you’re looking for affordable, natural, and eco-friendly gifts for you girlfriends, want to treat the girls to a day at the spa in your own home, or simply want to treat yourself to a little pampering, Homemade Beauty Products are the perfect solution.
