The timing for the release of this Film couldn’t be more relevant – in the era of so-called “fake news.” – a time where the media is being scrutinized and challenged. At a time where we are overwhelmed by the volume of information thrown at us daily, this film provides us with insight on how the media targeted a well-known public figure in 1990s India.
The film depicts how one headline of a newspaper made such an impact on so many lives. This couldn’t be a more topical issue. Most people these days don’t even read the articles they post. Just the attention grabbing title or headline alone gets us form an opinion and share it with the masses. The film illustrates why it is so incredibly important to know the source of the news and its reliability, along with the validity of its content. You get to see the impact of this first hand in this film.
Overall, the film is superb. The acting by Ranbir ( not Ranveer) Kapoor is flawless. The biggest compliment you can give to an actor who portrays a well-known man (who is still alive) is that you actually believe it is that person on screen. Kapoor was in tune with the character they were embodying. His portrayal of Sanjay Dutt was so seamless that while watching, you see Sanjay Dutt and not Ranbir Kapoor.
Rajkmar Hirani’s tact for storytelling is par excellence. The beats of the screenplay are at a pace which keep you engaged from start to finish. This is a story about relationships – relationship between a son and a father, a relationship between best friends, a relationship of an addict with his addiction, and a relationship between one’s conscience.
The critics who argue that this is a one-sided tale are forgetting the fact that YES it is in fact the story of a man, from his perspective, of what he went through and why. This is his voice. His chance to tell his side of the story. Hence, the title of the film. #Sanju
Vickey Kaushal was so raw and honest in his performance. Paresh Rawal was amazing as usual. Manisha Koirala struck the perfect balance in her portrayal of Nargis. Other than Anushka Sharma’s hairdo ( cabbage patch vibes), and a song or two(extra), everything worked.
