4 Powerful Style Tips for the Corporate Indian Woman

Power Dressing for women is about asserting themselves and projecting themselves as powerful and in control. It’s necessary to dress right to create that first and lasting impression of confidence. And it isn’t very difficult if you follow a few straight forward rules.

  • Simple, stylish and sleek can never go wrong.
  • Choose western or Indian formals based on your personal preferences and comfort.
  • Stick to the strong and powerful colours.
  • Bend Rule 3 when necessary.

As women, we are used to wearing a wide range of clothing types, colours, fabrics and accessories. But there need to be limitations on style and colour choices when selecting clothes for power dressing. Same goes for a choice in accessories.

In this article, we shall discuss the general principles for dressing for the job.

1.Clothing Style:

Many people believe that power dressing or any other form of corporate dressing, involves western wear. This is a huge misconception. You can choose between western wear – trousers, dresses and skirts – or Indian wear – saris, kurtis and cigarette pants. The basic rule is to keep the lines straight and the frills and ruffles out. Of course, if you are attending an international conference or meeting, western wear is more appropriate but never be afraid to make a statement.

The right way is to always go for lean and clean lines.

2.Colours:

Choose the corporate colours, black, grey, navy blue or white for the strong message they send. To make the look a little more interesting add colour here and there as accents. The same applies to short kurtis and long kurtas too which should be worn with a straight trouser (chudidars are also acceptable, avoid the traditional pyjamas). When you need to project a look of authority, wear something with a collar. You can go a little more colourful when you want to remove the severe element from the outfit. Try using colour like beige, coral or shades of rust. With western outfits, the colours remain the same but try adding a colourful scarf or a stole. Again choose their colour based on the occasion. Blacks, whites and greys are for highly formal occasions. You can add peaches and pale blues or even a dash or red for a friendlier look.

3.Make-up:

Use light make-up that isn’t very obviously visible, doesn’t run or show up under the harsh glare of lights. A light eye-liner and a pastel shade of lipstick is all that is needed. Short, well-manicured nails are necessary. If you like keeping your nails long then make sure they’re filed and remain clean. Also make sure you apply nail polish neatly.
Nail polish isn’t a must, but if you want one, light shades of silver or peach are fine. Avoid bright colours like reds and pinks for they draw too much attention. Take care of your heels even though your shoes might cover them.

4.Accessories:

Stick to the essentials. A thin chain of silver, gold or platinum with a small pendant of these same metals or diamond is ideal. Small to medium-sized pearls are also widely popular. You can add a pair of ear studs and a bracelet to match. Avoid long and dangling earrings because they are distracting. For a watch, a slim silver or golden one or a steel watch with a leather strap will do. Choose it based on your outfit. When it comes to shoes, there is a misconception that high heels display power. 1.5 to 2-inch heel is appropriate and they also keep you comfortable on a long day. Flats don’t go with power dressing. Blacks are the obvious choice. But you can go for white, nude or brown depending on your outfit. Handbags should coordinate with the shoes, ideally both of the same colour.
