Behind the scenes look: Meet Mitchell

It all started at a small school in southern Utah where I began studying Computer Science. Before that I switched my major various times. Computer science however, was the only subject that I was really interested in. Working with code made the time fly by fast. I’m not entirely sure if that is a good or bad thing though. When I moved to the Bay Area I experienced culture shock. For one, I realized the Bay Area work culture was so fast-paced, which explains why the tech industry is ever changing. My initial thoughts were, “Wow, this is going to be a lot of work, and it will be really hard.” And in fact my experience was just that, there was a lot of work, and it was really hard. I started with an internship at Nikalabs, and on my second day I saved over all of the files for a website (good start right?). There was a big learning curve coming from school to the actual work force, which I think every recent graduate can attest to. But nonetheless, I loved the work at Nikalabs. The whole reason I enjoy being a dev is because my work is pretty much solving problems. Obviously, the beginning was retaining all of this new information, but I was given the opportunity to think about solutions for different projects. For me personally, there is nothing better than solving a really tough problem. Every developer I have talked to has the same exact mindset. There are some nights where I don’t get to sleep, because the work requires a lot of my attention. And like any industry there can be tough people to deal with, but it is definitely a fun job. There are also new challenges that come up daily. The position is regarded to be a technical job however, it requires me to be creative as well. It is a unique combination, and I thoroughly enjoy it.
