As technology progresses, so does the amount of internet security threat also increases. Hackers find new ways to explore vulnerabilities and intrude online privacy.

There is a constant threat which most of us have to deal with.

Luckily a VPN comes over here as a great saviour. Needless to say, VPN has the potential to shield you from almost any online threat.

There are multiple VPNs available in the market. Some are free while some are paid versions.

In the market, there are many VPN providers and finding the genuine one could be a herculean task, especially if you have never explored a VPN service before.

Through this post, I will be providing a review about one of the popular VPN services – Cyberghost.

What is CyberGhost VPN?

CyberGhost is a partly free VPN. This was founded in 2011 and is headquartered in Bucharest, Romania. Till date, there are over 20 million users across the globe.

CyberGhost encompasses user’s privacy and security and supports uncensored internet.

Let me provide you more details about CyberGhost in terms of its pros and cons.

To begin with, let me start with the pros of CyberGhost.

CyberGhost VPN Pros:

Let me begin with the good stuff first. Something which you would be really excited and look forward while using their services. Well, CyberGhost has a lot of useful features.

They do not restrict their services only for privacy and security. Let us start this by checking their pricing and free downloadable version.

Free Version:

CyberGhost has a free downloadable version on their website. This is extremely simple to install and does not require much technical backing.

The option is readily available on the website.

The binary installation is almost instantaneous and it does not require too many details. Within minutes, you have your VPN up and running.

In the free version, you get to enjoy the basic VPN services. At any point, if you need to upgrade, then you can upgrade to any of the paid plans easily.

Customer Support:

Another pretty cool aspect is their customer support. Over their website, you will find support and help section completely dedicated to users.

You can reach their customer support by creating a ticket, email or chat option. CyberGhost provides an extensive knowledge base.

Their knowledge base contains guides, troubleshooting techniques, and several beginner’s guides. You would find information about almost anything related to their services.

If this is not enough, they also have an FAQ section. The knowledge base is well segregated based on the topics and the CyberGhost service type.

Additionally, they also provide few practical tips for using CyberGhost. This is designed not only for advanced users, but even novice users would find their services extremely user-friendly.

I tried their live chat option. Their live chat option is pretty fast and prompt. This was almost instantaneous with no wait time.

The customer support agent was prompt and provided all the relevant details quickly. Overall the live chat option is worth trying especially if you quickly need to gather some information.

Security and Privacy:

When it comes to security and privacy concerns, CyberGhost provides a range of services. It uses industry-standard AES 256 encryption.

CyberGhost has inbuilt DNS and IP leak protection. This is one of the most common security flaws existing in several VPNs and failure to protect DNS and IP leak will not keep your connection anonymous.

CyberGhost ensures to maintain 100% anonymity by not maintaining logs. Hence there is no way to backtrack and find your connection details.

It hides your IP details, by replacing your IP address with an IP address from the CyberGhost network. Thereby making it impossible for websites to track your online activities.

Along with this, the same IP is shared between multiple users. So it’s practically difficult to track down the origin of the transaction.

Thus you can be assured that your browsing anonymity is completely secured.

CyberGhost provides encryption not only to desktop users but also to its mobile users.

For instance, if you are connected using iPhone, it uses IKEv2 encryption. Similarly, no matter from which device you connect to their VPN, they use the highest security algorithm.

Not only this, imagine if you were to browse using VPN and suddenly face an issue with your VPN connection. In such cases, CyberGhost implements automatic kill switch mechanism.

With this, your existing transaction is terminated and not thrown over the open internet. This keeps your connection secure.

Pricing:

If you want more features than the free version, then you can get one of their paid plans. The long term plan has a 30-day money back guarantee. iOS and Android apps have a 7-day free trial.

The lowest plan starts at $2.75 per month with which you can save about 77%. For a longer period, such as 3 years, you would be billed an amount of $99. This is the most budgeted plan available.

Well, if you think CyberGhost insists you avail the longer committed plan, then this is not true. Unlike most of the other VPN providers, CyberGhost does not restrict users to choose a specific plan.

To explain this in more detail, you also have a plan for 1 year, 2 years or even 1 month. The pricing for these plans are as provided below-

Number of months
Pricing
Additional Benefits
1 month $11.99 per month No specific benefit
12 months (1 year) $4.99 per month In total, you will be billed $59.88 annually instead of $143.88

You save 58% with this plan

24 months (2 years) $3.79 per month In total, you will be billed $90.96 per month instead of $287.76
36 months (3 years) $2.75 per month In total, you will be billed $99.00 instead of $431.64

You save 77%

You also get a 30-day money back guarantee

CyberGhost has well-designed pricing model. You can choose a short-term as well as a long-term pricing plan.

Overall the longer committed plans have better benefits, but the shorter duration plans also come with few discounts.

Features:

CyberGhost provides most of the essential features of a VPN service. Some of the key features included are- hiding IP, kill switch, no logs, supports simultaneous connections to name a few.

The supported protocols are L2TP/IPsec, OpenVPN, PPTP. Multiple platforms such as Linux, Windows, Mac, iOS, Routers, and Android are supported

CyberGhost has more than 1800 servers worldwide and is spread across more than 60 countries. It allows simultaneous connections on up to 7 devices for paid plans.

It supports multiple payment options. This includes well-known and commonly used digital wallets and also bitcoins.

There are some additional features included such Block Ads. Others included are block malicious contents which has an inbuilt malware blocker.

CyberGhost also has services to block online tracking. This feature blocks online tracking by removing the website elements that contain tracking code.

This allows easy to use P2P torrenting and streaming with good bandwidth support, though this is blocked on certain free services. For Netflix, CyberGhost has dedicated server, which keeps changing IP and provides a seamless connection.

Some of the other tools included are force Https tool, do not track tool which exists as simple to use browser extensions.

CyberGhost seamlessly allows uncensored internet access even from geographically restricted regions. Moreover, CyberGhost has extremely transparent services and exactly provides you the list of available servers’ region wise.

Speed and Performance:

In terms of speed and performance, CyberGhost provides good metrics. Though there is some difference you would find between a free and a paid service. Still, this is good enough and fast.

Below is my Speed test before installed and then later installed..

The speeds are varying across different server locations. Clearly, Europe is a differentiator and has substantial performance as compared to others.

Overall though in certain cases, the speed is average or below average, still in most cases CyberGhost keeps up a high-speed metrics and is better than many of its competitors.

CyberGhost VPN Cons:

Lacks location diversification:

By and large, CyberGhost has a good number of servers. Certain regions such as the United States has 363 servers. Similarly, Germany has 256 servers.

While there is a good number of servers in a certain location, I found that certain regions lack servers. For some reason, the diversification of servers is limited.

Certain regions have servers as less as 4 to 10. The server distribution across Asia and Latin America is sparse.

Generally speaking, their servers are good in number around Europe and United States.

CONCLUSION:

For its VPN services, yes I do recommend CyberGhost.

On the whole, CyberGhost stands to fulfill your VPN requirement. Not only do they ensure privacy and anonymity, but also provide a whole range of other additional services.

Apart from the one downside I mentioned, there is nothing that is specifically bad about CyberGhost. Even this would only impact you if you are trying to access a region where the servers are less.

Be it their customer support or speed or pricing model, everything is good enough for users to try it out. Additionally, their easy setup and usage make it user-friendly.

Finally, yes you do get much more than what you pay for. It’s one of the VPN services that can easily fit your budget even if you want to use a paid version instead of a free version.
