HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF AGAINST CYBER FRAUDS

Cyber frauds are not exactly a new thing. However, it has been on the rise in modern times. This is due to our increased dependence on the internet and the comfort it brings us. We shop, book hotels and flights and pay for other things online. This has made our generation more susceptible to online hacks. Organisations are not left out of these attacks also, from online shopping sites, to financial institutions and government organisations; they are all potential targets for hackers.
Apart from stealing money, these guys also steal sensitive information which they can use in acquiring money or as a means of twisting someone’s arm.

How Internet Fraud Is Carried Out

Hacking

When you enter your card information online at e- shopping sites, hackers use malicious software and they are able to steal your card information. Then they proceed to use them in making purchases.

Phishing

Here Cyber Frauds send unsolicited mails, sms and calls. These messages are crafted in such a way that it appears to be from a legitimate organisation, say someone’s financial institution. Then they request for sensitive information such as account details, card numbers and pass codes. Sometimes embedded within the emails are links that when you click on will save your details.

Malicious Software and Virus

Such software can get into your devices when you download an infected app or software, or when you click on an infected link. These malware usually deliver sensitive information to the hackers, and then they can commit their crimes.

Steps To Protect Yourself from Internet Theft

Be aware that no Bank or legitimate organisation will ever send a mail or place a call requiring sensitive information or pass codes.
Always verify if an individual or organisation is exactly who they say they are ,before giving out information such as emails and phone numbers.
Beware of phishing emails. Banks do not send emails with links asking you to confirm personal information. Usually such things are done in person. Always double check with your bank, either by phone or through the internet. Nevertheless, make sure you type in your banks URL, do not use the links provided in the e-mails.
If you get debit alerts, receipts or bills for items you did not purchase, or from organisations you don’t do business with, double check. This may be a case of identity theft.
Install an up to date antivirus the paid ones are better. This will protect you from malware and virus attacks.
Always request for details of your bank statement every month, and make sure you understand all that you see. If not, the bank staff can always help you.
Other ways to protect yourself against cyber frauds include using credit cards instead of debit cards and always check on reviews before purchasing on a site or downloading apps.
