Here is a list of some of the most beautiful animated Love stories ever made. You might find it subjective, and it is, but there is no such thing as “objectively romantic”

For this year’s Valentines Day there’s another treat for lovers of animated film.

Today, the 14th of February, Chintis Lundgreni Animatsioonistuudio and Adriatic Animation Studio have exclusively allowed everyone to watch their new animated love fairytale Life with Herman H. Rott on Vimeo. The movie is an Estonian-Croatian short directed by Chintis Lundgren, and it has been screened at more than 30 world famous festivals, including Annecy. Whisper of the Heart (1995)

Whisper of the Heart is studio Ghibli’s romantic masterpiece unlike any other. It’s a wonderfully unique teenage love Story which doesn’t rely upon cliché plot lines or dialogues used and seen a million times in so many other films and series. This anime follows the life of a fourteen year-old girl, her relationships and emotions. The animation is (unsurprisingly for Ghibli) perfect and it makes the movie one of a kind. PS.  Chico & Rita (2010)

Chico and Rita is probably my favorite animated film of all time. Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal have managed to create a musical love story fit for all generations. We follow a beautiful Cuban singer and an extremely talented pianist in their passionate attempts to be together. The intricate plot and the obstacles they face during the film really make you cheer for them to succeed. A jazz filled love story that certainly deserves bigger attention.

Lady and the Tramp (1955)

What else could you say about Lady and the Tramp except pointing out the scene in which they eat spaghetti together. That’s probably the most memorable romantic moment in the history of animation. The great thing about this movie is the lack of Disney’s modern “childish” humor. Even though it was meant for both kids and adults, the story and the dialogues seem way more grown up than those of contemporary movies. One of Disney’s remarkable early masterpieces that remains one of the most romantic stories ever drawn.

Corpse Bride (2005)

This is not a horror story, as the title might suggest, but rather a wonderful tale of a lost love. One of Tim Burton’s best features, this stop-motion marvel voice casts Helena Bonham-Carter and Johnny Depp. Emily and Victor, their characters, are, I must say, very much like the real actors. They seem absolutely perfect for the part, and their voices and acting have made this movie so unforgettable. A brilliantly animated, visually astonishing classical (and yet unique) must see love story.

The Little Mermaid (1989)

This classical tale by Hans Christian Andersen is put on screen by Disney with perfect design and animation. The movie has become the only image of the story people remember. The classical version of a mermaid who falls in love with a prince has been enriched with many new characters (like Ursula the octopus), which have given the story a completely different feel. Ariel, a rebellious daughter of the god Triton, and her love for the handsome prince, is the perfect image of any teenage love affair.

Cinderella (1950)

This, apart from being one of the most romantic animated movies ever made, is also the quintessential love story after which so many others were written. Yet, the classical premise of a happy ending in which the poor or the ugly wins against a more fortunate character never seems to stop being attractive to the masses. It’s probably because it’s easy to indentify yourself with a more “human-like” character, than with a classical Disney princess.

101 Dalmatians (1961)

Every “dog person” could agree with this choice. A lovely story of a simultaneous love between two people and their dogs. Even though the biggest portion of the film happens after that, and we follow the story of a cruel woman and the adventures of Pongo and Perdita, their puppies and their owners, the movie wouldn’t have been a classic without it. It’s definitely one of the most beautiful movie love stories.

Pocahontas (1995)

One of Disney’s better “new era” films, which, for a change, deals with serious issues of real people. We follow a love story between a daughter of a Native American chieftain and a handsome colonist. Once again, a Romeo and Juliet like story of two people from two separate worlds, but this time with a twist.

Beauty and the Beast (1991)

This is probably one of the best classics that ever came out of the Disney Studios (and it’s also the first animated movie ever to be nominated for best picture at the Academy Awards). The movie and the characters have become incredibly recognizable, and the influence of Beauty and the Beast, or Belle and the Beast can be seen in countless other movies. One of the rare stories in which the transformation from a cruel antagonist to the main character’s loved one (a concept attempted a million times) has actually succeeded with perfection. Apart from the love story, the setting and the animation and character design gives this movie a romantic feel unique even for Disney.
