10 Terrifying VR Horror Games Like Resident Evil 7 Biohazard

Horror games like Resident Evil 7 are terrifying all on their own. But what happens when you play them in VR? You sh** yourself, that’s what happens! Resident Evil 7 VR’s mode proves that the tech is far more than just a novel gimmick. It empowers the game with full 360 immersion, making you feel like a true horror hedonist. Every jump scare, creepy-as-f*** environment, and murderous Baker family member adds to the sale of adult diapers. Best of all? Resident Evil 7 VR mode is at the moment a PlayStation VR exclusive. However, it’ll eventually be officially available for Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and other VR headset users (Impatient? You could always try this hack!) That being said, we thought it’d be fun to put together a list of 10 Terrifying VR Horror Games Like Resident Evil 7 Biohazard that’ll scare the living bejesus outta you. However, keep in mind there are tons of VR horror games out there – too many to put into one list. So, we’re just going to share 10 of our personal favorites. We’ve also thrown in a few Honorable Mentions at the end. This list includes a few games that support multiple VR headsets. Others may be Oculus Rift / Gear VR / HTC Vive / PSVR / etc. exclusives. Monstrum Monstrum is easily one of our favorite VR horror games like Resident Evil 7 (a title also loved by ACG). You play a man desperate to escape from a procedurally generated ship filled with frightening monsters. VR interactions are immersive, and you’ll spend time solving basic puzzles while sneaking around. Graphically, Monstrum looks amazing with great texture work and lighting effects. The game also plays out like a horrific hybrid of Resident Evil 7 and Amnesia. This means you’ll be juggling your inventory slots as you try to avoid coming face-to-face with killer monsters. In addition, directional sound is excellently used to create tense environments, cuing you to where danger lurks. The scariest part? Monstrum punishes you with permanent death! Thus you’ll have to be extra careful while sneaking to avoid being torn to shreds. Monstrum supports the Oculus Rift and is a must-try if you’re in search of other VR horror games like Resident Evil 7! Read more honest reviews of Monstrum.   2. Affected: The Manor Made for the Oculus Rift with Gear VR support, Affected: The Manor is one of the most popular VR horror games among YouTubers, including PewDiePie. You play through three different scenarios: the manor, the asylum, and the carnival. Each has its own distinct horror style. However, all three are equally terrifying, showcasing polished VR graphics, sound, and lighting. Affected knows how to ramp up the jump scares at all the right moments. The game also has lots of memorable set-piece moments that, while linear, will haunt you long after you’re done. Stylistically, Affected mirrors Resident Evil’s decrepit look with a tinge of Layers of Fear’s imagery. In short, Affected is a sheer fright-fest, holding its own among the best VR horror games like Resident Evil 7. Read more honest reviews of Affected: The Manor.   3. The Bellows The Bellows isn’t as popular as Monstrum but is still definitely worth a look if you’re yearning for more VR horror games like Resident Evil 7. Coming with HTC Vive support, the game puts you in the shoes of a man alone in his home as a storm rages outside. It isn’t long before strange events start to happen to you – flickering lights, haunting whispers, etc. That’s when you realize you aren’t quite as alone as you thought… This VR horror game is admittedly on the short side, clocking in at only about 30 minutes. In addition, some immersion-breaking moments (e.g. loading screens, etc.) detract from the overall fear factor. The second half of the game is also weaker than its first. However, for its low price, The Bellows succeeds as a deeply satisfying experience evocative of the best VR horror games like Resident Evil 7. A worthy inclusion to this list! Read more honest reviews of The Bellows.   4. Until Dawn: Rush of Blood Released as part of the PSVR’s launch lineup, Rush of Blood differs from Resident Evil 7 in key aspects. For one thing, it’s strictly an on-rails shooter. Thus you won’t be free to roam about on your own. There’s also no clue-gathering and inventory-managing to speak of. However, make no mistake. Despite the above differences, Rush of Blood will give you a truly terrifying experience similar to other VR horror games like Resident Evil 7! Loosely inspired by the Until Dawn series, you’ll use your Move or standard PS4 Controllers to shoot at various scoring targets. Ghastly creatures leap out at you, trying to kill you where you sit. Each stage is themed according to different boss fights. The game’s overall scariness is made even more visceral by Rush of Blood’s roller-coaster thrills n’ spills. You’ll speed down winding tracks, dodging your head to avoid getting smacked by obstacles. The sense of speed here is truly immersive. Rush of Blood is without question one of the best PSVR experiences available, standing tall among other VR horror games like Resident Evil 7. Note: You’ll also want to try Albino Lullaby if you’re a fan of Rush of Blood’s horror aesthetics. This game comes with full Oculus Rift / HTC Vive / OSVR support with tons of positive Steam reviews.   5. Emily Wants To Play You play as a pizza delivery boy who visits an odd and seemingly silent house. Gingerly stepping in, you quickly realize you’re not alone. In fact, three freaky-as-f*** dolls and a strange girl want to… play with you. And, no, this isn’t the kind of playtime you’ll like. Emily Wants To Play is one of the most popular VR titles on Steam at the moment. Similar to other VR horror games like Resident Evil 7, you’ll roam about the house, trying to stay alive as you figure out how to play the murderous ‘games’ of Emily and her living toys. The story’s a bit cliche (i.e. Puppet Master?). However, the jump scares are horrifyingly real. Graphics are simple but effective, with creepy aural cues guaranteed to scare the living color outta you. You’ll often find yourself holding your breath as you turn each corner, afraid of what awaits you. Some VR lovers have complained about the game’s immersion-breaking teleportation system. However, overall, Emily Wants to Play is a must-play if you’re keen on more VR horror games like Resident Evil 7. The game comes with official Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and OSVR support. PSVR owners will have to wait for now. Read more honest reviews of Emily Wants To Play.   6. Dreadhalls Dreadhalls is ridiculously frightening in VR. The game’s premise is simple: trapped in a dark and treacherous dungeon, you’ll need to dig deep to find the courage to escape its twisting procedurally-generated hallways. Dreadhalls is also reminiscent of Amnesia and SOMA with frightful monsters that’ll kill you if you get too close. Tense orchestral hits and positional sounds enhance the overall VR immersion. Aesthetics-wise, Dreadhalls falls on the weak side with somewhat bland textures. However, you’ll easily overlook this thanks to the game’s oppressive atmosphere, effective jump scares, and horrific imagery. Overall, this is easily one of the best VR horror games like Resident Evil 7 available. At the moment, the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and OSVR are all supported. An upcoming PSVR 8-games-bundle is also in the works. Read more honest reviews of Dreadhalls.   7. Sisters Out for Android devices, Sisters is an episodic horror title that challenges you to discover the dark mysteries of Aunt Faye’s creepy home. Akin to other VR horror games like Resident Evil 7, the game makes full use of atmospheric sounds, scary imagery, and terrifying jump scares. You’ll also be solving room puzzles and discovering clues that give a glimpse into Sister’s horrific backstory. Reviews for currently released episodes have been mostly positive, with many seeing sisters as one of the better mobile VR experiences available. Overall, you’ll definitely enjoy Sisters if you’re into VR horror games like Resident Evil 7. The game will soon be out for the HTC Vive with room-scale support. If you’re a PSVR owner, this terrifying VR experience will also soon be grouped with Dreadhalls in a great VR package. Read more honest reviews of Sisters.   8. ARAYA ARAYA is an atmospheric horror adventure game that drops you in the middle of an old Thai hospital. Told from the perspectives of three characters, you’ll explore abandoned rooms as you try to discover the truth behind the murder of Araya. Akin to a few VR horror games like Resident Evil 7, ARAYA puts you in a number of tense chase scenes as you desperately try to flee from enemies. Constant jump scares will also keep you on the edge of your seat, begging for mercy. In addition, you’ll rely heavily on your pathetic smartphone flashlight, making every dark corner all the more frightening. ARAYA’s controls do get a bit wonky at times. There are also a few small graphical glitches that impact your overall VR immersion. However, none of this detracts too much from what is surely one of the best VR horror games like Resident Evil 7 around. The game is currently available for Oculus Rift with upcoming HTC Vive support. Read more honest reviews of ARAYA.   9. Doors of Silence Popular on YouTube, Doors of Silence pulls you in with its haunting atmosphere as you sneak around asylum hallways and sewers filled with monstrous creatures. And when we say creatures, we mean skinny pale freaks with bloodshot eyes that’ll make you want to rip off your VR headset and run for your life! For a VR game, Doors of Silence looks absolutely fantastic thanks to detailed 2K textures and shadow effects. Sound is also spot on with solid environmental noises and tense musical cues. All of this helps to enhance your overall VR immersion. Similar to other VR horror games like Resident Evil 7, you’ll often have to hunt for items in order to progress through locked areas. There aren’t too many jump scares – although the overall atmosphere remains as scary as ever. Doors of Silence is available for free download with support for Oculus Rift headsets. Read more honest reviews of Doors of Silence.   10. Here They Lie Here They Lie differs from other VR horror games like Resident Evil 7 in some ways. To begin with, this PSVR game is drenched mostly in monochromatic colors, with a few dashes of blood red and yellow thrown in. It also adopts a more surrealist / Lovecraft-esque tone compared to Resident Evil 7’s cabin-in-the-woods / found-footage vibe. That being said, VR lovers tired of ‘too-short’ horror games will be glad to know that Here They Lie’s gameplay lasts about 4-6 hours. You’ll explore fairly large areas, including abandoned train stations, dark sewers, and odd dream-spaces. Jump scares are few and far between. However, the game’s foreboding symbolism and slow-burn approach really works to squeeze your nerves over time. The story is intentionally vague. This may put you off if you aren’t interested in ‘abstract’ narratives. Still, the game excels in giving you an overall immersive VR horror experience. Everything is made even better thanks to a recent patch that improves texture quality. Here They Lie is currently a PSVR exclusive.   Want to see 7 more VR horror games like Resident Evil 7?
