It has the feeling and appearance of the car chase genre that grew in popularity decades ago. The Training level of the game makes this inspiration and connection obvious. It plays out like a scene from the film The Driver. Throughout the rest of the game, you will notice other similarities that draw a line between this game and the films and television series that came before it.

This game builds the cities that you drive through. The cities have some similarities to the real life cities, but there are differences. It is not a true recreation of the major cities. You also have an open world setup that allows you to drive around freely. There are no blocks around the streets that force you to stick to a specific, predetermined path. This was a relatively novel idea back then.

The Story of Driver

Driver follows the story of John Tanner as he goes undercover for the NYPD. Tanner goes undercover into a crime organization where he will become a driver. Using skilled driving techniques, he will move his way into the organization to unearth secrets and to take down the big bad of the game. You start the story in a parking garage, which is the Training level. When you successfully impress the organization members, you become one of them and start doing other missions. You will go to Miami, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York City. Missions include driving cars to the gangsters, pickups, and chases.

You can play the story your own way. Missions typically have two choices laid out for you. You can choose what you will do, which will affect the story and ending.

Who is in Driver?

Driver has a rather small list of characters.

• John Tanner: Tanner is the main character, the protagonist. You play as him throughout his undercover work for the NYPD.
• McKenzie: Tanner’s lieutenant at the NYPD.
• Castaldi: Big crime boss.
• Don Hancock: Man running for president who is working with Castaldi.

There are a handful of other characters spread out throughout the game. Most of them are single city characters that you will not see or hear about once you move on to the next city.

How Does Driver Look?

Graphics were, for the most part, normal for a PlayStation game. Many people applauded and praised the graphics, especially with the level of detail that went into those graphics and the open world. Graphic improvements did come about with the PC port, though.

The One Who Made Driver: Ubisoft Reflections

Driver comes from Ubisoft Reflections. At the time of release, it had the name Reflections Interactive. Ubisoft picked up Reflections Interactive in 2006 and had the name changed shortly thereafter. They have gained ownership of Reflections content and have continued certain titles. Series that Reflections has continued since it switched hands are Driver and Just Dance. Since becoming part of Ubisoft, Reflections has also worked on several other major titles. These titles include Watch Dogs, the Tom Clancy series, and Far Cry 3.

The Drive Continued: Driver 2

Due to the popularity of Driver, more games have come from the series. The direct sequel is Driver 2. This, again, follows John Tanner and is vehicle oriented. You spend a large amount of the time driving around and completing missions, just like the first. Unlike the first, though, Tanner can exit the vehicle. Exiting the vehicle becomes imperative at certain parts of the story. Another similarity between this and the original is the focus on Hollywood driving films. It is similar to driving films, again, and has a developed story with cut scenes.

The Cheats, Codes, and Unlockable Features of Driver

Driver does have a large amount of cheats and unlockable features. There are driver cheats that you can unlock right away when you input the appropriate code. You can also unlock these cheats when you beat the game. These are readily available to you once finishing the main story. Some cheats include invincibility and police immunity.

Unlockable features are available after unlocking cities. When you unlock a city, you can go for a drive with one of several modes. It is open world so you can drive around the city freely. Driver has these for all cities.
