The flamethrower is a nod to Elon Musk, as his Boring Company began selling ‘not a flamethrower’ flamethrowers at the beginning of 2018. Musk tweeted at the time that the weapon’s “safe word is cryptocurrency,” which Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford response was, “I’m going to add this to our next Borderlands game.”
It seems Pitchford followed through with the tweet as the Firesale Long Musket is a legendary gun in Borderlands 3. The red text for this legendary gun reads ‘Say “cryptocurrency”!’ - a reference to Musk’s tweet earlier last year.
