E3 is praised by video-game enthusiasts every year as a prime time for the medium. During this year’s conference, however, reorganizational shifts in Amazon Game Studio left many without a job, making their E3 2019 a difficult one.

According to a company’s spokesperson, “These moves are the result of regular business planning cycles where we align resources to match evolving, long-range priorities. We’re working closely with all employees affected by these changes to assist them in finding new roles within Amazon. Amazon is deeply committed to games and continues to invest heavily in Amazon Game Studios, Twitch, Twitch Prime, AWS, our retail businesses, and other areas within Amazon.”

A source reported on by Kotaku also states that “Amazon also cancelled some unannounced games”, shifting the company’s development focus almost entirely towards projects that have been already unveiled.

As an Amazon representative says: “Amazon Game Studios is reorganizing some of our teams to allow us to prioritize development of New WorldCrucible, and new unannounced projects we’re excited to reveal in the future.”

Such a move comes as surprising because as pointed out by The Verge, it hasn’t been long since Amazon strengthened its game studios in 2014, purchasing developer double helix, responsible for the most recent Killer Instinct titles.

Amazon has not fully disclosed just exactly how many people lost their jobs as a result of the studio’s reorganisation, and its impact on product releases remains yet to be seen.
