One of the cities biggest Science Technology Engineering Art and Mathematics festivals returns to the Greater Toronto Area for another year, celebrating and encouraging creators of all ages on Saturday, May 11.

An annual tradition starting in 2008, Science Rendezvous is a nation-wide science festival founded with the goal of engaging minds and sparking scientific curiosity in all who attend. Universities, colleges and city spaces throughout the city, including four city blocks surrounding St. George Street will offer a host of interactive activities, demonstrations and experiments and stage shows for families to explore and discover.

This year, attendees will have opportunities to fly drones through miniature cityscapes, explore mind-controlled robotics, witness chemistry magic shows and experience virtual reality with exhibits and presentations led by experts in their field.

A list of some of the participating venues and their respective activities can be found below:

University of Toronto (11: 00 am – 4:00 pm)Canada’s largest STEM street festival occupying over 4 blocks in downtown Toronto.  This year the event will feature numerous exhibits that integrate the theme “STEAM big”, with over 100 awe-inspiring and explosive demonstrations and hands-on experiments.  Highlights include piloting a drone through a miniature city, virtual reality tours, optical illusions, robots, rockets, satellites, liquid nitrogen ice cream and much, much more.

Ryerson University (10 am – 4 pm): Join Ryerson University in Kerr Hall quad in the heart of Ryerson’s campus and enjoy a day outdoors with science.  This fun-filled event will include the opportunity to see amazing research, participate in hands-on activities and displays, and learn how science plays a part in our everyday lives.  Spend the day with Canadian scientists and innovators and get connected with science.

Toronto Zoo (10am-4pm): Come spend the day with scientists from the University of Toronto-Scarborough and student leaders from Let’s Talk Science and, of course, the animals! The whole family is invited to explore their inner scientist through hands-on activities and engaging demonstrations. We also have a scavenger hunt full of clues for young investigators.

University of Ontario Institute of Technology & Durham College (10:00 am – 3:00 pm): Meet the scientists who turn innovative research ideas into real solutions for society. Experience fun, hands-on STEM activities or do a Mini-Workshop.  Take an interactive tour of ACE (Automotive Center of Excellence) and visit the Science Cavalcade.

York University at Main Street Markham Farmers’ Market (10:00 am – 3:00 pm): York University scientists and students will be on site all day to answer today’s most burning science questions and conduct exciting demonstrations, hands-on activities, and cool experiments.  Get your hands dirty with some of the leading scientists in Canada. Come make monster bubbles, watch fire demonstrations, extract DNA, and more.

The University of Guelph-Humber (10:00 am – 3:00 pm): Learn about your body from the inside out. Begin with a peek inside cells, basic anatomy and the science behind the brain. Explore the science of fitness, health and how the mind and body are connected. What does it mean to be fit? How do we measure if someone is fit? Fit for health, or fit for the job? Forensics, Perceptions, Memory and more.

George Brown College-St. James Campus (10:00 am – 2:30 pm): Meet the chefs and food scientists who turn innovative research ideas into real solutions. Take a tour of our experiential kitchens and see how scientists test your food, then follow-up with your own sensory test to assess your palate’s sensitivity, and finally get involved and participate in a sensory panel to see how we assess food and compare your results to others. Finish off the day with some hands-on workshops and a cup of homemade ice cream.

Bridgepoint Healthcare (12:00 pm – 4:00 pm): Become a scientist with Scihigh of Mount Sinai Hospital at Bridgepoint Healthcare. You’ll be able to extract your very own DNA, control a robotic claw with your brain, construct edible neuron models and learn how to pipette just like a scientist.
