Gears of War 4: Late to the Party

Gears of War 4, released in October 2016 to average reviews. It is the latest in the long-running Gears of War series from Epic. I managed to spend some time in the multiplayer beta test and quite enjoyed it. I wasn’t very good but then again I never am with online multiplayer games or modes.

Now was my time to dive into the game. I started to pay for the XBOX Game Pass and the game is on the long list of games to play.

It didn’t take me long to get through the game just a few evenings in fact. I enjoyed it, I did, but I just felt like something was missing, that something wasn’t quite right. Here are some of my thoughts on what may have been the issue:

New Storyline for a New Generation

The storyline in the original games and any loose ends were tied up at the end of Gears of War Judgment. With that, it was also a storyline that began in 2007 when the first game launched. A new storyline for a new generation of gamers that also needed to resonate with veteran gamers was the order of the day.

And maybe that is one of the issues, trying to please too many people. I enjoyed the storyline even if it wasn’t very deep.

Robot, Robots and More Robots

As the locusts from the first 4 GOW games were defeated, Epic needed to have something for you to shoot at in the game. This, however, is just until they could reintroduce the locusts and bring them back into the storyline about halfway through the game.

It’s a Family Affair in Gears of War 4

I found something weird about the two main characters shouting Mom or Dad all the way through the game. Perhaps I was used to the very manly atmosphere of the first lot of games.

For the Greater Good

Behind the few things mentioned above, there is still a solid game behind it. The controls are as you remember them in previous games. The action comes thick and fast. Big set pieces, lengthy firefights, high-speed vehicle chases, big bosses, explosions along with some twists and turns along the way.

Hey Good Looking

Gears of War 4 is a good looking game as well as fun. The characters are as chunky as they were in the other games. I think this is why it sounds weird when they keep shouting mom and dad throughout.

The gameplay can, however, feel a bit repetitive at some points in the game. It feels like you enter an area such as a tomb kill the enemies then move into the next area kill the enemies and so on. It’s times like this I wish the game could have been broken up by including more driving sections. Just something to vary the gameplay a bit more.

That Ending!

The ending for me was a bit of a letdown. I just thought it was building up to some over the top massive ending but after the end boss, who was easy to defeat, by the way, the story dwindled off with a whimper.

It felt like they didn’t put much effort into it.

Gears of War 4: Late to the Party Final Thoughts

Overall I enjoyed my time with Gears of War 4. It is fun, good looking and a solid cover shooter that is let down by a few things. It is still worth a playthrough at least once.
