Battle of the Streaming Giants: Netflix vs Amazon Prime [Infographic]

Now under no obligation to spend time outside and with all our favourite shows finally making a comeback (welcome back BoJack Horseman, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and The Good Place), we face unlimited cosy nights of indulgence in front of our TVs.

As the Fall TV season sets in, many of us may want to take the opportunity to reevaluate our choice of Streaming service. If you are considering making a switch to Netflix or Amazon Prime, you may want to check out this useful infographic comparison guide from the guys at Frame Your TV. Who Has The Better Price?

Both services offer excellent value for money, providing unlimited access to thousands of movies and shows for a very competitive price. Netflix and Amazon both have several tiers of packages – with the more expensive ones offering added bonuses.

Netflix’s standard streaming plan currently costs $10.99 per month. If you decide to splurge on one of the more expensive packages, you can enjoy perks such as simultaneous access from multiple devices as well as 4K HDR streaming (a feature which only has very limited availability on Prime Video). No matter what package you go for, you will still be able to access all the content on the site.

Amazon Prime membership now costs $12.99 per month. Unlike Netflix however, this fee only covers some of the Prime Video library. The silver-lining is that it does offer some benefits in addition to the streaming service. For example, avid online shoppers may be keen to avail of unlimited free 2-day shipping on many Amazon items. Members can also enjoy access to music streaming as well as the Kindle library.

Who Has Better Selection?

In terms of content, Prime Video wins with a whopping 22,971 available films and TV series versus Netflix’s mere 5,617. While Prime Video does initially sound like the more appealing option, subscribers should be aware that much of the content on the platform does not fall within membership costs and you will have to pay extra to rent or buy certain movies or TV shows.

One major drawback of Netflix is that the size of the content library may be limited based on your location. For example, as of April 2018, Netflix UK had 3,616 movie titles, versus 3,616 for the US. While Netflix may not have quantity on its side, it certainly does boast quality. The streaming platform has produced some of the biggest TV hits in recent years (e.g. Daredevil, Stranger Things, The Crown) and has garnered an impressive 430+ nominations and 72 awards for its original programming.

What Does the Future Hold?

Netflix has made an ambitious goal to spend more than $8 billion this year alone on more than 700 original shows. It has some potentially fantastic projects in the pipeline such as Guillermo Del Toro Presents 10 After Midnight and a Henry Cavill-led adaptation of The Witcher video game series.

Prime Video is also upping its content game massively with plans make a “The Lord of the Rings” TV prequel, “Homecoming” – a Julia Roberts thriller directed by “Mr. Robot’s” Sam Esmail, and three new series from Nicole Kidman’s production company.

However, the emergence of a new streaming service from Disney in 2019 could see the defection of thousands of subscribers from both platforms. While details of the service are scarce, there is a good chance that this service will be significantly cheaper and allow access to the entire classic Disney, Marvel and Star Wars films.
