Kate Mara Must Determine the Fate of a Violent, Genetically Advanced ‘Girl’ in Morgan

Ex Machina, probably the best film of last year, was the directorial debut for Alex Garland – and what a strong debut it was. Watching the trailer for Morgan, its hard not to notice similarities in tone and storyline, it is also crazy to discover that the film is also the first feature length project for director Luke Scott. And like its predecessor, Morgan is in the running for the best film of this year – in my books anyway.

Rated R for brutal violence, Morgan follows what happens when a corporate risk management consultant (Kate Mara) has to determine whether or not to terminate a ‘girl’ named Morgan who is the living result of an artificial DNA experiment, kept locked in a cement cell within a grand disused mansion in a secluded location. Morgan (played by Anya Taylor Joy of one of this year’s finest films The Witch) seems like an innocent girl at first, who presents a great opportunity, but as her temper grows thin with being kept underground, she presents boundless danger. It poses the question: as it wasn’t her fault that she was brought to life in a laboratory, so is it morally fair to kill her? As the cell doesn’t prove capable of containing her and her superhuman strength any longer, they are left with little choice. The cast includes Boyd HolbrookJennifer Jason LeighPaul Giamatti, Toby Jones, Sam Spruell, Michelle Yeoh and Rose Leslie. It’s safe to say the screenplay has to be brilliant to attract a cast like this.

If, like me, you’re not a fan of super humans, don’t be put off by the premise, this is a thriller / drama more than it is anything else and it looks brilliant. Morgan is due for release in September. You can watch the trailer below.
