mother! was by far the clear winner!
With an era full of reboots, sequels & adaptions, it’s refreshing to see an original film such as mother! in the cinemas. Due to its great cast, consisting of Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, Michelle Pfeiffer, and its talented director, Darren Aronofsky, the anticipation for mother! was very high. However, mother! was nothing like the trailer showed it to be. Watching the trailer, you would think mother! was another home invasion film, but it’s much more.
mother! has received mixed reviews since its release and is probably the most polarising film of 2017 so far. It has even been compared to marmite as you either love it or hate it.
So, is mother! a bold and brilliant masterpiece which breaks boundaries? or is it an over the top, pretentious and frustrating film? Scroll down to see the different opinions we have received from our wonderful twitter followers.
The “This is a bold and brilliant film” Reviews
Curious, bold, shocking and uncompromising but goes a bit overboard with its religious references. Jennifer Lawrence is amazing.
4/5— Plain, Simple Tom (@PlainSimpleTom) 23 September 2017
Oh, sorry. Forgot the score. 5/5!

I basically echo everything Matt said + it’s one of my favorite commentaries on religious and its frustrations.
— InSession Film (@InSessionFilm) 22 September 2017
A raw + visceral masterpiece from a director and an actress at the top of their game. A brutal assault on every sense. Mesmerising. 5/5
— nathan (@__Nathan) 22 September 2017
Relentless, eerie, claustrophobic, maddening, confusing, brilliant. Jennifer Lawrence shines. Excellent cinematography. 4.5/5.
— Lolo (@lololovesfilms) 22 September 2017
Aronofsky’s best film: pushes his recurrent theme of artistic obsession AND the boundaries of mainstream cinema beyond their limits. 4/5.
— Alistair Ryder (@YesitsAlistair) 22 September 2017
Surprisingly deep, hilariously shallow; enjoyment comes down to your sense of humour, but this is a wonderful film with fun intentions 4.5/5
— Lee Brady (@BigPicReviews) 22 September 2017
A masterclass in metaphorical storytelling, unpredictable & always pushing boundaries. It also produces some brilliant performances. 4/5.

A biblical thriller that will haunt you for days, gripping and sickening. Performances and cinematography to die for. Sensational

You gotta be open minded and digg deep into your thoughts to put this puzzle together. It’s a dark deep movie that sticks with you. It’s a 5

The “This is a frustrating film with an unpleasant second act” Reviews
Look, I got the religious allegory and it’s certainly going to have its crowd. But after the second act it goes completely off the rails.2/5
— Lee McMonagle (@yourpallee) 23 September 2017
Bizarre + frustrating. The 2nd hr completely ruined what was an engaging thriller. Multiple viewings? One was enough. Disappointing. 2/5
— Nathan Kemp (@PRIMEMINISTER20) 23 September 2017
Full of artistic merit. But I just wanted it to be over. Hated it.
Thought Lawrence was awful.
1.5/5— Dantooine (@Danburden1138) 22 September 2017
50% fascintating, 50% bewildering, and increasingly tiresome. All subtlety thrown out the window in a frustrating second half. 2/5.

I deeply disliked #mother 1 1/2 out of 5 – https://t.co/I9eJZAgYDZ #mothermovie
— TL;DR Reviews (@TLDR_MovRev) 23 September 2017
Overly complicated, too many long takes, horrendously miss-sold, This is an art film that does need multiply viewings to understand 2.5/5

The “I liked it” Reviews
Bold, but dark and unsettling but in this age of endless sequels and reboots, refreshing to see something so daring and unique, 3.5/5

We received various reviews on mother!, majority were positive and many loved that the film was daring, well-written and innovative. Many thought the performances were great and the film had stunning cinematography. However, some people were frustrated by the wild second half of the film and thought it ruined the whole movie for them.
Watching mother! is definitely an experience and whether you love it or hate it, it’s a film that will certainly get you talking.
