Review – Allied

The latest Review is of the 2016 World War 2 thriller, Allied.

Directed by Robert Zemeckis, and starring Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard, the Film follows two spies as they initially unite to complete a mission in Casablanca, Morocco, only to then fall in love and get married. It is directed by Steven Wright (previously wrote Locke, Eastern Promises, and Dirty Pretty Things)

Pitt stars as Max Vatan,  a Canadian pilot, working for the British RAF during the war and  Cotillard as the French resistance hero Marianne Beauséjour. They unite as a supposed married couple in an attempt to assasinate a visiting Nazi dignitary.

After the mission, the two, who have now fallen in love, make their way back to the UK to be married.  As they settle into life in England, it becomes clear that they may not have left their pasts behind…

I really liked this film. Really liked it.

It is a film set in World War 2 that is tense, atmospheric and clever, rather than loud, shouty and CGI’d.  It doesn’t let up and that is little surprise when you consider the previous work of Knight in terms of tense thrillers.

It is Pitt’s best performance in ages and Cottilard is fantastic throughout. In a supporting role, Jared Harris is also excellent.

If you’re in the market for a war time thriller, this is the film for you.

8/10
