What I’ve Watched – June 2017

Tags: film watched dory

As part of our attempt to get back into the swing of things, it’s time to resurrect the ‘What I’ve Watched’ series. If you haven’t seen it before, we outline all the films and TV shows we Watched in a certain month, and give our Film and TV pick of the month.

Quick note – this isn’t going to replace the Wednesday feature article that forms part of our schedule: this is rather a supplementary article. Also, you will be able to tell there’s a lot more films we’ve seen this month than reviewed, so expect some detailed write-ups on some of the following films in the coming weeks.

Films

  1. Supersonic (2016)
  2. South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (1999)
  3. District 9 (2009)
  4. The Magnificent Seven (2016)
  5. Deadpool (2016)
  6. Star Trek Beyond (2016)
  7. RoboCop (1987)
  8. Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007)
  9. Imperium (2016)
  10. Finding Dory (2016)

Film of the month: It’s going to be very difficult to pick just one film that I really enjoyed this month, because there were a couple here that really impressed me. I’ll rule out films I’d seen before (so RoboCop and Deadpool – while deserving – aren’t applicable). My first pick is Imperium – I don’t want to go into too much detail as a review is on the cards, but Daniel Radcliffe delivers a great performance, and Daniel Ragussis’ screenplay is surprisingly layered. I wasn’t expecting much, and Imperium certainly surpassed my expectations. My next pick is Finding Dory. Having seen Finding Nemo as a child, I patiently awaited a follow-up, and even though I only got around to it recently, I wasn’t disappointed. The story is touching, moving me to an unexpected degree, and it does a great job of falling into the same plot structure as Finding Nemo. Some Pixar sequels have struggled to match the magic of the original (Monsters University, Cars 2), but Finding Dory bucks this trend, proving worth the 13-year wait.

TV Shows

  1. Game of Thrones S5 E1-8
  2. Arrested Development S1 E1-2

TV Show of the month: I’ve watched an embarrassingly small amount of TV this month, but what I have seen really blew me away. Getting back into Game of Thrones before season 7 later this month, I’ve once again been totally absorbed in the world of the show. There’s not a bad performance in there, and it’s easily the best-written and most impressive programme I’ve ever laid eyes on. A lighter alternative is Arrested Development – I decided to restart the show as it had been too long to go back from where I was, and yet it still feels fresh despite seeing these episodes before. Jokes are as punchy as ever, and some of the performances, notably David Cross as Tobias, are genuinely masterful.

What have you watched this month? Be sure to leave a comment as we always reply, and be sure to leave a like if you enjoyed this post and want more like it. Thanks for reading!
