New Zealand Outdoors: The 5 Most Famous Hikes Of New Zealand

To make the story complete, I am also writing down the best hikes that you and everybody else traveling this beautiful country probably heard of. This is my personal preference ranked from all the guidebook hikes I did in New Zealand. 1. Avalanche Peak (South Island) One of the steeper and more involved one-day hikes in the country. It is about 6 hours there-and-back track starting from the village of Arthurs Pass in the center of the South Island. The hike itself is little more than a steep climb up a mountainside. What makes it special are the views from the top. Avalanche Peak has a unique position between deep valleys and glaciers of the Arthurs Pass National Park. And if you have more than a day in the area, you can drop to the other side of the mountain and explore some quite remote valleys on your way out. You can find all relevant information here. 2.
