Why Mt Nicholas Farm Experience should be on your bucket list

New Zealand is filled with endless activities and experiences to tick off your bucket list; a Milford Sound Nature Cruise, jet boating on Lake Wakatipu or bungy jumping to name a few. One experience that is less obvious, but equally as unique to New Zealand is Mt Nicholas Farm Experience!

Farming has been New Zealand’s bread and butter since the early days. The wool industry has flourished here and at one point there were 10 sheep to every human! Mt Nicholas Farm Experience takes you into the heart of a working sheep station. Take a tour around the farm, meet the animals, learn about the journey of merino wool and enjoy the breathtaking views. It should be added to your New Zealand bucket list immediately!

About Mount Nicholas High Country Farm

Mt Nicholas High Country Farm isn’t just any ordinary farm, it’s where some of the finest merino wool in the world is produced for world renowned clothing brand, Icebreaker and has been family owned and operated for more than five generations.

Mt Nicholas itself is over 100,000 acres of pristine land with amazing views of the Southern Alps. From Queenstown, the only way to get there is via Spirit of Queenstown Scenic Cruise which adds to the overall experience.

Meet the gang

Upon arriving at Mt Nicholas you will likely be greeted by our friendly pet lamb, Lucky. Lucky has been with us since birth and loves nothing more than hanging out with our visitors. Lucky isn’t your average sheep, he likes to do his own thing and doesn’t follow the herd, he’s a bit of a rebel! He loves posing for a photo so make sure you grab a selfie.

Lucky loves posing for a photo.

Mt Nicholas Farm Experience is all about interaction and learning, and is not just about the sheep, but every animal on the farm. The local chickens will meet you out on the paddock and you will see the farm dogs in action. The opportunity to meet a few friendly sheep as they pose for photos and enjoy some food right from the palm of your hand is also a memorable experience!

Shearing the sheep

After that, it’s on to the shearing sheds where the sheep head twice a year, once for a tidy up and the other for a “spring clean” kind of haircut!

From September to November you might be lucky enough to witness the shearing in action, but if not, your guide will explain how it’s all done and show you some merino wool after it has been sheared.

Take a scenic drive around the farm

Now it’s time to jump into an off-road 4WD bus! Your driver will take you around Mt Nicholas showing you the many other animals that live on the farm. These include horses, cows, rams and birds who fly freely around the property! If you’re lucky, you may even see a few eagles!

Making plenty of stops for photos, the scenic drive is the perfect time to sit back and relax before enjoying a farmers platter lunch complete with local meats, cheeses, and produce.

Enjoy some incredible views towards Glenorchy and the Southern Alps.

Perfect for the whole family

Mt Nicholas Farm Experience is a perfect activity for kids and will have them smiling from ear to ear the whole time. Kids love the freedom of the farm experience and meeting the animals is something they won’t forget. The best part is that it’s a safe environment for them to explore!

But Mt Nicholas Farm Experience isn’t just for kids, it brings a smile to every visitor. Whether it’s the interaction with the animals, the magnificent views or the learning experience, Mt Nicholas Farm Experience has something for everyone!
