Giacometti Institute

The new Giacometti Institute opened in June and I paid a visit last week.

Located in the 14th arr. near the Fondation Cartier, The Giacometti Institute is more of a jewel-like showcase for select Giacometti works rather than a full-blown museum.

The director of the institute, Catherine Grenier, came up with the idea of opening a space dedicated to Giacometti when she was working at Centre Pompidou, where she viewed the artist’s prolific collection.

Housed in an exquisite Art Nouveau home from 1914, I was just as caught up in the architectural details of mosaics, woodwork, and stained glass as I was the artwork.

The ground floor entrance has an exact replica of Giacometti’s 20-meter studio, which was originally located nearby at 46 rue Hippolyte-Maindron in Montparnasse, a haven for many artists in the early 20th century.

The institute contains over 70 never before seen sculptures from Giacometti’s last studio days in the 1960s. Many of them were too fragile to be transported before.

The current exhibit is The Studio of Giacometti as Seen by Jean Genet. Poet and writer Genet and Giacometti had a deep friendship after they were introduced to each other in 1954 by Jean-Paul Sartre. Intensely studying Giacometti and frequently visiting the studio, Genet wrote a book, The Studio of Alberto Giacometti, and a copy of the original manuscript with a selection of drawings and sketches (some of which have never been shown), notebooks, photographs, and video archives is displayed in the exhibit.
