1918- The Rise of the New World at Les Invalides

I saw the first edition of La Nuit des Invalides in 2013 and was swept away by the incredible imagery, music, and storytelling.

This year the producer of La Nuit des Invalides, Bruno Sellier, has created a new spectacle, 1918- The Rise of the New World, which commemorates the centennial of the end of WWI.

The story of 1918- The Rise of the New World is told through the voice of Martin, a seven-year child from the French countryside who unexpectedly finds himself exiled to Paris. He experiences the horrors of war firsthand but there is a glimmer of hope and humanity through it all. Thirty-five scenes illuminated on the walls of the of the courtyard follow Martin’s journey, movingly depicting the sounds and sites of soldiers, civilians, women, and children who struggle to survive.
One of the new innovations of the show which I had not seen before is black and white silent film images inserted into the illuminations, which gives the people in the story more depth and reality.

Another feature of the spectacle, which I, unfortunately, missed that evening, is the opportunity to view the stunning chapel of Les Invalides lit with thousands of candles. I will go back this week to see it and post photos and a story.

Better book your tickets soon, 1918- The Rise of the New World only runs till September 1.

Please note: the show is in French but you can rent headsets with English translation for 5€

1918- The Rise of the New World is shown every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday night at 10 AM
