Brief background of UNESCO Heritage Sites

The idea of creating an international movement to protect heritage emerged after World War I. The 1972 Convention on Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage developed from merging two separate movements: one focusing on preservation of cultural sites, and the other dealing with conservation of nature.
