As you may already know, we are very active in ensuring our parks are comfortable and welcoming for all of our visitors, and that includes the local wildlife too, particularly the Bees who are in desperate need of as much help as possible.

We are always finding new ways to create bee and wildlife friendly areas in the parks, and like to encourage homeowners to do the same where possible.

If you are interested in getting involved, or entering your park garden into the Wild about Gardens Awards Scheme, here are some helpful tips for creating a beautiful, bee-friendly wild garden.

1. Plant the right flowers

In order for our bees to pollinate effectively they need to have the right flowers and plants, pollen-rich, full of nectar and in a variety of different shapes and sizes. Some Flower varieties may not have enough pollen or may be too small for the bees to reach inside so it is important to do some research before planting. 2. Plant seasonal flowers

In order to attract bees all year round, it is a good idea to plant a variety of flowers and plants to cover all seasons. This will ensure all types of bees will have exactly what they need throughout the year, and through each season.

3. Plant wild flowers

Wildflowers are extremely easy to plant and maintain, they look beautiful and they are also pesticide free which can be harmful for the bees. Wildflowers local to your area are also great for the local wildlife, and as such, wild bees thrive in a wild environment. Find out more about wildflower varieties and where to find them here.

4. Build a bee house

Bee houses provide cover and protection for bees and their young if they need it. It also provides solitary bees a place to nest and lay eggs. Here’s how to make your own.

5. Provide water

All this pollinating and flying around from flower to flower makes for very thirsty work, and for some bee varieties, is needed for the honey making process. Ensure the water you provide is shallow so the bees do not drown, and there is an ‘island’ or edge on which they can perch whilst they stop for a drink.
