(eng) Looking for a cenote

It was day off again. What would we do? Again to the beach? No, too hot. Then we remember that someone had spoken to us of a cenote arround Macao. But where was it? Searching the internet nobody said how to get there. Anyway, we decided get ready and to go in search of this new place.

We left home under the blazing sun diretion Macao. A few kilometers before the turnoff to Macao beach we stopped to refuel and asked about the cenote. The seller gave us some indications but luckily for us, some local boys were heading to the area and they offered to accompany us.

After a stop at the “colmado” (grocery store) to buy a rich snack and refreshing water, we follow the guys for a dirt road between farms and buggies full of tourists heading to our same destiny.

At the end of the road a place full of little local shops with souvenirs awaited for us. After telling to the avalanche of sellers that we lived in Bavaro and we did not want to buy anything we parked the motorbike in the garden of a Dominican house and went to find the cenote.

Apparently there are several caves but if you want to access other cenotes you must pay the entry because they are on private property.

These are the photos we took.

After a refreshing bath and an exhausting play with some dominican children, we sat at the bar to relax and drink a very fresh “Presidente” (dominican beer). As you can see dominicans dance very well from an early age.

How to get to the cenote of Macao:

If you go from Bavaro gather the highway direction Miches. At the junction of Macao Higüey take the Higüey exit to your left and continue on this road until you see the cemetery on the left side. Passing the cemetery is also on the left side Alberto buggies an inmediatly a dirt road that you have to take. Follow this road to the first intersection in which you shall take the right road and again until the end. It has not lost since the end of the street tyou can find the local shops that we spoke about before. Enjoy the swim!
