Chez Simon: A Self Catering Gem near Bordeaux, France.

Website: www.bordeauxwinelands.com | Email: [email protected]

Chez Simon is located in the Town of Blaye which is a working village in the heart of the Bordeaux wine country. The property is situated on the towns oldest street and contains 5 fully restored self-catering apartments in a d “Maison de Maitre” building. The building itself is of historical significance and even the wooden staircase leading up to your apartment is an original Louis 14th staircase which is on the regional registry of important antiques.

The Facts

Each of the 5 apartments have modern furnishings including a flat-screen television, Internet access and well appointed kitchens. The building was completely renovation in 2011, so all fittings and finished are practically brand new. A well appointed kitchen is a must if  you want to enjoy the spectacular range of fresh produce available at the weekly markets. If you are travelling on a budget, this option offers notables saving to regular restaurant dining. The apartments have a number of different configuration options:

2 x One Bedroom Apartments with a separate lounge, open plan kitchen & private bathroom.
2 x Studio Units have a open plan bedroom, kitchen & private bathroom.
1 x Loft Apartment – the largest open unit with kitchen with bathroom.

A large private courtyard area is ideal for relaxing on warm summer evenings.

Chez Simon is a 1 Minute walk from the centre of Blaye which has a range of coffee shops and quaint restaurants. As with many towns in France, Blaye has a market twice a week on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Because Blaye is a town of historical significance and forms the centre of the Bordeaux wine district, the market is one of the larger and more interesting in the region.

A World Heritage site 1 minute away

The jewel of Blaye is the Citadel which is a world heritage site. The Citadel dominates Blaye and is a walled or fortified town complete with draw-bridges you’ll need to cross to enter the small village within the walls. When you stay at Chez Simon, your apartment is a 2 minute walk from the Citadel.

A Paradise for Wine Enthusiasts

Blaye is on the coast of the Gironde Estuary which cuts the Bordeaux wine heartland into the left and right bank. Wine is the raison de’etre (reason for being) for everyone who lives in and around Blaye and the surrounding towns. As you walk, cycle or drive through the countryside you’ll notice every spare piece of open land is dedicated to a vineyard and almost all non-residential buildings are wine related.

Blaye itself has a few excellent wine shops, the Maison du Vin in the center of town being the best and most representative of local appellations. Blaye is surrounded by a few excellent Châteaux including Chateau Vauban and Chateau Barbre which produce excellent and reasonably priced wines.

Chez Simon is a 3 minute walk from the Ferry on the bank of the Gironde and a beautiful 10 minute ferry ride will get you to the left bank which is in the Medoc region. From the ferry arrival, you are a 10 minute car ride or 30 minute bicycle ride from 4 of the Premier Cru chateaux including Chateau Margaux in the town of Marguax and in the town of Pauillac you’ll find Chateaux Latour, Lafite Rothschild and Mouton Rothschild.

Calling all cyclists, runners and hikers!

Blaye is on the beginning of a very long cycle trail that wanders for more than 30 miles through small historical villages and vineyards. It’s excellent for cycling, running and walks. There are also many other walks in the area that go directly through vineyards on chalky paths with gorgeous views of the local towns and sights.

Blaye has an excellent bicycle shop that rents bicycles for a very reasonable price.

Perfect for?

Perfect for Wine enthusiasts looking for a central location to explore Bordeaux wine making districts. History buffs looking to explore the Citadell and historical towns like Blaye and Bourg that are steeped in history. Cyclists, runners and walkers who want to spend their day rambling through wine country.
