We’ve had a rather quiet year of Geocaching so far. Mainly due to being so busy organising exciting Mega Essex things, but also because of the bad weather. With the weather brightening up and sunshine in the sky we had a few really enjoyable trips out grabbing some locally placed caches.

Wimpole Estate is a beautiful area owned by the national trust with Wimpole Hall inside. You have to pay to enter the hall, however, the rest of the estate is free to walk around and the National Trust have encouraged Geocaching there by hiding their own caches in the grounds. We’d enjoyed quite a few caches that the National Trust had hidden before, so thought the short series of 6 caches would be a good one to check out on Bank Holiday Monday.

We parked on the outside of the estate where parking was free and took a short stroll into the grounds starting at Wimpole Cache 5. We soon uncovered the decent sized container which our Geodog was obviously impressed by! ;) Just as we found the cache we spotted some familiar looking faces approaching… It was our friends stones2005! We were very surprised to see them there, but pleased that we had some company for the rest of the series.

It was such a beautiful day to be walking and in the distance we spotted something fabulous which looked like a castle!

We headed towards it and over a rather grand bridge to find out that it was a folly, and a very impressive one at that! It was built in the mid-1770s under the orders of the then owner of Wimpole Hall. Unfortunately we couldn’t explore it as it was closed off for restoration work, but it was still great to see up close.

From the folly we had quite a long walk out of the main estate area and into the woods. Along the walk there were several really large benches and at Wimpole cache 2 we took the opportunity to have a sit down near “The uncarved block” (Whatever that may be!)

After heading off for Wimpole cache 1 in Cobb’s wood which seemed like a very long way out, we headed back into the main area for Wimpole cache 6 where we were treated to some lovely views of the hall.

We had walked just over 7 miles by the time we had gotten back to the car and had found just 9 Geocaches. A very good example of quality over quantity and some beautiful scenery and sunshine!
