An often misunderstood and overlooked Austrian resort, Obertauern is one of the highest and most modern in what is already one of Europe’s best-loved skiing nations. Here’s what you need to know.

1. It’s one of Austria’s highest resorts

Perched at a respectable altitude of 1750m, Obertauern is the highest Resort in the Salzburg region and one of the highest in all of Austria. It should be no surprise then that its affectionate alternative moniker ‘SNOWbertauern’ is well-earned; Obertauern has a reputation for being one of the country’s snowiest resorts, with a recent study finding its average snow depth to be 264cm – 25% more than the second-place resort, Zurs am Arlberg.

2. It’s unique

Obertauern is more-or-less alone among Austrian ski resorts in that it’s purpose built. While that might mean it lacks a little of the Alpine authenticity present across so much of Austria, it also means it’s one of the country’s most modern and convenient resorts. Everything from the lifts to the snow machines to the hotels is pretty recent, and designed with skiers in mind which, we think, can only be a good thing.

3. The skiing’s incredible

Say what you like about Obertauern, but if anyone tries to criticise the skiing… well, they’re just wrong.

This high-altitude delight has 100km all to itself and really does have something for everyone, including 61km of easier piste, 35km of intermediate and 4km of advanced runs. It’s easy to navigate because all the runs feed back into the town – the resort sits at the centre of a big mountain bowl, and the awesome Tauern Circuit will take you on a 10-15km joyride of cruisy greens, blues and reds. Not to be missed.
