Is Photography Safe? Here’s A Photographer Fired And Attacked For Capturing Love

As we all know, Photography is all about capturing human-ness or inhuman-ness prevailing in this world. But very strangely, Bangladesh abhors the art of capturing warm images. A famous Bangladeshi photographer was ‘slapped’ for clicking a picture of lovers kissing. Violent force was used against him and he claimed to be a victim of “unwanted cruelty”. The stereotypical country found the picture scandalous enough to declare him “not fit to work” and even doubted the incident to be staged. Clearly, the news junction, The Purboposhchimbd (where alleged Jibon Ahmed worked), needs to recheck with the codes of humanity.

Ahmed took help of Facebook, the most widely used social platform, to exhibit the details of the treacherous treatment he received since posting the picture he clicked. Very interestingly, Ahmed captioned his picture with the words “Songs of rain- let love be free”, clearly a rebellious move towards the sick-minded society. The incident took place inside the campus of the Dhaka University. The incident was also covered by some news sites.

Now the concern was, whether the image has violated Bangladesh’s public decency laws or is still within the periphery of decency. Some even questioned whether the photo was taken with consent or not.

Later in an article, The Purboposhchimbd clarified that the image was “pre-planned” and Ahmed apologised for his deed. The editor of Purboposhchimbd had a very diplomatic outlook to the entire situation. He said that Ahmed can take a legal action for the assault he had to face. But at the same time, the use of “models” for his photography proves that he is ineligible for the job of a photographer.

Having shared this news, we want to ask you if capturing love is really such a big offence. Is this right?
