A day in Kovalam beach, Kerala

A day in Kovalam Beach, Kerala

Roughly 12 km from Trivandrum is the town of kovalam. The Kovalam Beach is famous and well known in Kerala and in its tourism sector. It offers something for everyone with a wide range of budget.

We were impressed by the beauty of the Kovalam beach as it was like, “just another crowded beach” along the Arabian Sea. Many people were laying on the sand, or playing in the water. The water sports guys asking if you want a ride, even before we had stepped on the sand.

Despite the crowds, the blueness of the water could not be missed.

The scene here was completely different. Although it was too crowded, on other side of beach there were hardly any Indians here! There were foreigners from different countries which of course meant the presence of English speaking vendors. Asking us if we wanted to rent a bed “to lie down, relax and enjoy the sunset”.

Vizhinjam Lighthouse at Kovalam beach

This part of the Kovalam beach is known as the lighthouse beach. Because of it’s beautiful view we get to see from top of the lighthouse, Also it was our main interest. The lighthouse, officially known as the Vizhinjam lighthouse. At 30 meters, it is the tallest lighthouse in Kerala.

The lighthouse is open from 10 AM to 5 PM except on Monday.  We climbed uphill to the road, at the end of which, was a gate to the lighthouse complex. It wasn’t locked or anything, we all went inside the gate.

Sadly, we couldn’t get to the top of the lighthouse as we reached at around 5:30 PM. So all we could see was a view from its base.

The view from here was breathtaking! As if you had the entire sea to yourself! All we could see stretched below us were the blue waters of the Arabian sea, everywhere. We explored the entire lighthouse complex as much as possible, seeing the sea from every angle possible.

The sun was still high up, so we decided to walk around town before returning to the beach for the sunset.

Around the town we get to see many guesthouses and resorts. Shops selling all kinds of things described as “Indian Products”. Also there were many ayurvedic massage parlours, hotels and spas.

During the time of a sunset it felt odd to be on a beach in India and not be surrounded by the crowds. No shouting of the vendors and just us sitting quietly on the sand. Listening to the sound of the waves.

At the end of a day we saw a change of colour from blue to a splash of orange. This was the best sunset we have seen in our entire trip. A lucky day, it certainly was!
