Six Itineraries for the Best Sights of Rome
This map shows the main sights in Centro, the Historical Centre. The sights have been subdivided into six itineraries of one-day walks. Some additional sights are not part of these itineraries but are shown on the map – if you have lots of time.
- Itinerary 1 covers from Piazza Campidoglio via Forum and Colosseum to Domus Aurea
- Itinerary 2 covers from Trevi Fountain via Pantheon to San Ignazio di Loyola
- Itinerary 3 covers from Circo Massimo via Teatro Marcellus and Jewish Ghetto to Trastevere
- Itinerary 4 covers from Vatican Museums via St Peter’s and Hadrian’s Mausoleum to Piazza Navona
- Itinerary 5 covers from San Giovanni in Laterano to Trajan’s Market.
- Itinerary 6 covers from Trevi Fountain to Sant’ Eustachio Caffè
If you have only three (full) days – the bare minimum for Rome – then do Itineraries 1, 2, and 4. Do not miss Basilica San Paolo fuori le Mura. It requires a long Metro ride south. Tack that on to Itinerary 2 since it is part of a Roma Antica tour.
Depending on your hotel location or your primary interest, do the itinerary in reverse order. In the summer. you may also want to do outdoor sites like the Forum in the early morning before it gets hot.
Click the [ ] icon to see expanded view of the interactive map then click check boxes on or off to display or hide each itinerary layer. There is a meaning behind the colours of the icons: dark red is a five-star sight (must-see); orange, extremely good (must-see); yellow, very good… and blue is an unrated points of interest.
