6 Places In Mumbai That Highlight The Wonderful Cultural History Of The City

Mumbai might not be a centre of Mughal dynasty and thus we don’t see any Humayun tomb here but the ‘city of dreams’ has some Wonderful spots that highlight the wonderful culture of this beautiful city. Here are our top 6 places to explore the Mumbai culture:

1. Gateway Of India


This monument was built in the 20th century and is a unique landmark of this city. The whole idea to build this was to commemorate the visit of King Gorge V and Queen Mary in Bombay(now Mumbai). One can spot many tourists here and people flocking the site for it’s beauty. Also, even if you haven’t seen it in real life, chances are that you have spotted it in movies for sure!

2. Haji Ali Dargah


This beautiful ‘dargah’ is in Worli and was constructed in 1431 in the memory of Sayyed Peer Haji Ali Shah Bukhari. People from all religions and walk of life come here to offer prayers and listen to the ‘qawwalis’ as well. This beautiful mosque also has a dedicated song titled ‘Piya Haji Ali’ in the movie ‘Fiza’ , which starred Karisma Kapoor and Hrithik Roshan.

3. Kala Ghoda


This place is a crescent shaped district and houses a number of galleries, museums and monuments around it, including the National Gallery Of Modern Art. The name literally translates to ‘black horse’, which is actually a reference to the statue of King Edward VI. Today many hip designer cafes and India modern art galleries have started opening to attract the whole ‘arty’ vibe.

4. Elephanta Caves


This UNESCO world heritage site is a major tourist attraction in the city of dreams and houses cave temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. While no particular date is recorded when these were built, but according to scholars it was between 5th to the 9th century. The Portuguese people named it ‘Elephanta’ after spotting many statues of elephants inside it. They are not exactly in the city but on an island nearby.

5. Mount Mary’s Basilica


This Roman Catholic church stands on a hillock and overlooks the wonderful Arabian Sea, which is a wonderful sight. The history of this church is beautiful and very interesting. As per the records, the statue of Virgin Mary was brought by the Portuguese priests back in the 16th century. This church is often spotted in Hindi movies as well.

6. CST Station


Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (formerly known as the Victoria Terminus) is also a UNESCO world heritage site and also is the headquarters of the Central Railways. The design is based on the lines of Gothic Revival Architecture and was built in 1887. The name of the station was changed in 1996 to honour Chhatrapati Shivaji.
