Delhi is not just the capital city of the country but also holds an important place in terms of the historical map of our nation. It has served as a base to the Mughal dynasty and then the British. For history lovers, it is a heaven because there is a part of its beautiful history in every corner. However these four Monuments in the city are a must watch for that endearing experience:

1. Qutub Minar

This historic Minaret is the largest minaret in the world which is made of bricks and is also a UNESCO world heritage site. The construction was undertaken by Qutub-Ud-Din-Aibak around 1192 and was completed by Illtutmish, his son-in-law. The architecture of this minaret is inspired from Afghanistan’s ‘Minaret Of Jam’. Around 1505 , the minaret was slightly destroyed by a massive earthquake but was later restored by Sikander Lodi. The area is massive and a wonderful delight on a winter morning.

2. Humayun’s Tomb

As the name suggests, this was made for the Mughal emperor Humayun and was commissioned to be built by his first empress, Bega Begum. This is also a UNESCO world heritage site and nowadays, you’ll find people taking walks and having picnics in the gardens here. The main tomb houses the grave of Bega Begum and was built nine years after Humayun’s death.

3. Red Fort

This is a monument which is supposed to be India’s pride . it served as a residence for the Mughal dynasty for over 200 years and earned the status of a UNESCO world heritage site in 2007. The construction was commissioned by Shah Jahan in the 16th century when he decided to shift his capital from Agra to Delhi. Sadly, after colonialism, the fort was looted off it’s jewels. Every year on Independence Day, the PM hosts the national flag over here as the nation beams with pride.

4. India Gate

This is a war memorial build along the Rajpath in Central Delhi. This was constructed in memory of the Indian soldiers who lost their lives during the World War II. Edwin Lutyens was the brain behind the design. The green lawns around it serve as a picnic ground for families today. It also houses the ‘amar jawan jyoti’, or the ‘eternal flame’ as it’s called.
