What does Sunnah Mean in Islamic Religion

In terms of the Islamic scholars’ point of view, a consensus has been reached over the actual meaning of the term Sunnah. And it states that Sunnah is everything that relates to the Holy Prophet Muhammad SAW, including his statements, biographical life, words, actions, physical traits, personality and approvals. It does not matter whether the actions or wordings of the Prophet SAW were being referred to before his prophet hood or after.

Statements of the Prophet SAW

When it comes to sayings or statements of the Prophet, it means everything that the Prophet stated for various reasons on multiple occasions. An example of the Prophet’s sayings is in the following verse:

“Deeds are verily based upon by intentions, and every soul shall have only they have intended.”

Actions of the Prophet SAW

In terms of the actions of the Prophet, they include a wide array of things that were performed by the Prophet and then related to all of us by his companions. Examples of actions performed by the Prophet include the method through which he used to perform his ablutions, his method of praying, as well as the ways through which he performed the Hajj pilgrimage.

Approvals made by the Prophet SAW

When it comes to the approvals made by the Prophet, it is referred to the numerous array of matters being discussed by all his companions and whether he showed his approval or disapproval over matters. Anything that was given an approval by the Prophet is valid as being something said or done by the Prophet himself.

An example of a tacit approval granted by the Prophet was during the Battle of Bani Quraydhah, where he commanded troops to offer afternoon prayers only after they had arrived at Bani Quraydhah.

Personality and physical traits of the Prophet SAW

The Sunnah of the Holy Prophet SAW also includes his personality or character as well as his physical appearance. In regard to this, the Prophet has been mentioned as being a man of exemplary character who was never indecent or vulgar. He was always tolerant and merciful towards all. In terms of physical traits, it has been mentioned that the Prophet was neither tall nor short in height and was neither too dark nor too light in complexion.

Significance of Sunnah in today’s life

Muslims are commanded to make use of the Sunnah as a guidance of light, alongside the teachings of the Quran. It is a wonderful means of gaining wisdom and knowledge of the Islamic way of life, allowing all Muslims to live a journey that is most pleasing to their Creator.

This can be affirmed by the verse from the Quran: “…We have sent down to him the Book and the Wisdom.” Here the book refers to the revelations of the Quran and the wisdom refers to the Sunnah bestowed upon the Holy Prophet.
