A Brief History of the Train
Its name is based on the royal background of the train’s carriages which were inspired from the actual royal coaches of the Maharajas, Nizams and Viceroys of the bygone days. After India’s struggle to get independence from the British, on 1947, the country became a democracy.
The reign of the Maharajas ended and so did their extravagant lifestyles. Soon their hunting carriages that were decked out to be as grand as palaces ceased to exist. They couldn’t be opened for public as they were heritage structures and had expensive furnishings which would charge a hefty cost for their upkeep and maintenance.
So, the Rajasthan Tourism Department along with the Indian Railways in order to promote tourism launched the Palace on Wheels to provide travelers a royal experience.
