10 Out-of-the-Box Adventures to Enjoy in Los Angeles

It’s no secret that Los Angeles is an incredibly unique place. From its rich history to its Hollywood culture, theme parks and extraordinary attractions, there’s truly no other place like it in the world.

But if you’ve been to LA before—or you simply prefer a creative vacation—you might be ready to skip the standard attractions and experience something truly out-of-the-box. And luckily, there are plenty of ways to do that.

But there’s one standard vacation practice you should adhere to when you visit the LA area: Renting a car. You can count on an inexpensive Car Rental Los Angeles experience when you use Super Cheap Car Rental. Our rentals are much less expensive than the cost of rideshare services, and we’ll help you experience LA on your own terms. And remember, we specialize in underage car rental Los Angeles specials, so you won’t be discriminated against based on your age.

When you’re ready for a truly unique LA experience, just incorporate a few of these into your vacation. You’ll make some amazing memories and have a blast.

Catch a movie… at a cemetery

You’ll find outdoor movies all over Los Angeles, but not quite as interesting as the films shown at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. The summer series is hosted by Cinespia, and if you’re in LA during a showing, you should definitely go. Just make sure to get there early to snag a good spot on the Fairbanks Lawn.

Walk through an abandoned zoo

The former Griffith Park Zoo, which opened in 1912, is now abandoned and known as the “Old Zoo.” The Old Zoo was abandoned when a larger, more modern version opened nearby, but you can still tour the old grounds, which are rumored to be haunted. The address is 5400 Griffith Park Drive.

Explore the weirdest museum you’ll ever see

The next time you’re in LA, go to Chinatown and find Velveteria, one of the city’s most bizarre museums. The “museum” is actually more of a gallery of one couple’s love for velvet paintings. The collection features 3,000 paintings from around the world. Admission is $10, and they’re open every day except Tuesday.

Speaking of museums, this one is super sinister

It takes a certain type of person to be interested in the Museum of Death, which was founded in San Diego in 1995. In 2000, James Healy moved the museum to its current LA location (on Hollywood Boulevard), where it features the largest collection of serial murder artwork, photos from crime scenes, and other creepy relics.

If you think seeing autopsy instruments, a collection of body bags and coffins, and the Heaven’s Gate Cult recruiting video sounds interesting, the Museum of Death is definitely the place for you.

Eat at the fanciest diner in the city

The Fountain Coffee Room is located at the Beverly Hills Hotel, and walking inside feels like stepping back in time. This classic counter-service diner has been open since 1949, and its banana leaf wall decor with blush pink accents will charm you. Marilyn Monroe used to sip milkshakes here, and Guns N’ Roses signed a contract at the diner’s counter.

Experience the food truck festival of your dreams

First Friday at Abbot Kinney is a must-see for all foodies. On the first Friday of every month, LA’s best food trucks gather on Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice. The event typically lasts from about 6 PM until midnight, but the earlier you can arrive, the better. There’s truly something for everyone, from short rib tacos to fancy grilled cheese creations.

While you’re in Venice, check out the canals

Not to be outdone by Venice, Italy, California has its own version of the Venice Canals. The peaceful canals are located just a few blocks away from the eccentric Venice Beach, offering a restful respite from the chaos. Most tourists don’t even know the canals exist, so you’ll have the pleasure of experiencing LA like a local.

Observe the Griffith Observatory Tesla Coil

Tesla himself designed this coil to someday transport the world’s electricity by air. While that sadly hasn’t happened, it’s still a unique and interesting sight to see. The Tesla Coil is enclosed in a newly designed alcove, and it’s free to see anytime during normal Griffith Park hours.

Stock up on soda

If you’re a fan of soda, you’ll be amazed by the selection at Galco’s Soda Pop Stop on York Boulevard. Not only can you find over 500 flavors here (including obscure creations like rose water), but the owner, John F. Nese, is extremely knowledgeable on matters of soda flavors. Stock up on some sweet souvenirs to take home.

Tour the city’s coolest cathedral

The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels opened in 2002, designed to replace the Cathedral of Saint Vibiana, which was severely damaged in the 1994 earthquake. The building stands as a monument to Saint Vibiana, a third-century Roman martyr and patron saint of Los Angeles. Not much is known about Vibiana herself, as her body was laid to rest with only a vial of blood, a laurel wreath, and a tablet.

It’s possible to visit Los Angeles 100 times and have 100 different experiences. Make each of your trips unique.
