Brunch: A Melbourne Institution

No short break to Melbourne would be complete without a weekend brunch. But with so many incredible eateries around, here are the ones we reckon should top your list. Make ours a skinny flat white with smashed avo on sourdough!

Top Paddock, Richmond

A notorious Melbourne brunch spot – and for good reason. They have unique takes on classic breakfast dishes, such as their slow cooked beans with goats curd and chorizo. With lines running out the door regularly on the weekend, be prepared for a long wait for a table.

Seddon Deadly Sins, Seddon

With a hidden garden out back and an opulent sitting room upstairs where you can wait for your table in style, this tiny café is a lot more than meets the eye. Be sure to try one of their seven deadly sins dishes, such as Envy, which is their version of Green Eggs and Ham.

Archies All Day, Fitzroy

If you’re feeling a bit rough from the night before but you’ve got diverse cravings in your brunching group, Archies is your best bet. Where else can you get a cheese-stuffed burger and super grains granola at the same time? Get a Bloody Mary on the side and feel your hangover melt away.

Ascot Food Store, Moonee Ponds

With a focus on locally sourced ingredients, this menu this a foodies dream. Keep an eye out for items showcasing duck eggs and pork belly for a truly decadent breakfast, and be sure to get your hands on one of their homemade syringe-spiked doughnuts.

Monk Bodhi Dharma, Balaclava

A Melbourne brunch isn’t just for the carnivores – vegetarians rejoice! Melbourne has a bunch of excellent vegetarian cafes to cater to your meat-free needs, but Monk Bodhi Dharma is one not to be missed. We’re big fans of their Avignon Apple Pancakes and their Smashed Pea Bruschetta.

Crowded House, Williamstown

This popular breakfast spot is loved by locals and churns out delicious meals and coffees at a surprisingly fast pace, considering the amount of tables they’ve squeezed in. The menu is a dream of simply prepared quality ingredients, but we highly recommend the Spiced Zucchini and Chickpea Fritters.

St Martins Café, Gardenvale

The kitchen staff at this newly-opened café are definitely skilled, and the plating of their dishes makes them almost too beautiful to eat. Luckily, they also happen to be too delicious to resist. From Surf ‘n’ Turf to Mandarin Panna Cotta, the breakfast menu is a feast for the senses.

Mixed Business, Clifton Hill

Mixed Business has been building a large following across Melbourne, with scores of people making the trek across town just for a taste of their brunch offerings. Their all day menu is filled with comforting and satisfying offerings, such as Hot Roast Rolls and their Breakfast Burger, but if you’re after something sweet you must try their Apple Pie Waffles.

Hardware Société, Melbourne CBD

If you’re staying in the heart of the city, don’t think that you have to make the trek to the outer suburbs to get a great brunch. Located in the busy Hardware Lane, this bustling inner city café is just as busy on the weekends as it is with the business crowd during the week. Their Spanish-inspired menu doesn’t skimp when it comes to portions so you’ll definitely be leaving with a full belly.

Barry, Northcote

Serving up unique flavour combinations that will delight you, this Northern suburbs café doesn’t follow anyone else’s lead. Whether they’re adding Granny Smith apples to their eggs Benny, or mashing together flavours with the precision of kitchen wizards (try their Crunchy Peanut Butter, Tomatoes and Salt & Pepper Peanuts on Toast – it’s actually good!) you’re going to be in for a surprise.

When it comes to incredible Melbourne brunch spots, there are always options within walking distance of any good hotel if you know where to look. In need some other activities around Melbourne that don’t involve food? Check ’em out here!
