Seefeld in Austria – Perfect for Summer Walking in the Tyrol

The Austrian Tyrol is well known for its gorgeous alpine scenery, picturesque ski resorts and fantastic summer Walking country.  Each valley has its own attractive towns and villages, most supported by excellent bus and train services and mountain lifts to get you high into the mountains.  There are literally dozens of mountain resorts that make ideal bases for walking holidays.

Seefeld is an incredibly attractive little town, very easily reached from Innsbruck.  With a pedestrianised centre, upmarket shops and plenty of good hotels and restaurants it makes a perfect base.  As well as being surrounded by excellent walking country, the town offers golf and tennis facilities, a casino and regular concerts.

How to Get to Seefeld

The easiest way is by train from Innsbruck.  There are numerous direct trains every day, and the journey time is approximately 35 minutes.

You can also easily reach Seefeld by train from Munich and Salzberg, and with a longer journey time from Vienna.  See Rail Europe to check times and routes or purchase tickets online.

For a large selection of rail passes, including multi-country passes, see Interrail.

Where to Stay

We stayed in Hotel Haymon, and cannot recommend it highly enough.  The location, rooms, service and evening meals were all excellent and great value.  We would definitely use the same hotel again.

Walks and Excursions Around Seefeld

The scenic valleys around Seefeld with relatively flat roads and cycle paths make hiring a cycle a good way of getting around.  E-bikes are particularly popular in the area.  Tourist Information offices will provide a list of outlets where you can hire them, and details of the network of battery-charging stations.

Easy excursions include Innsbruck and pretty Mittenwald in Germany, both of which can easily be reached by train in around 30 mins (see Rail Europe).

There are a couple of mountain lifts which get you up into the mountains (see this page).  For an excellent selection of walks around Seefeld we recommend Walking Easy in the Swiss and Austrian Alps by Chet Lipton.  Don’t be put off because the book is a bit old – the lifts and paths haven’t changed.  You can use the book to get ideas and check lift times and paths online before you set off.

For more walks from the town and in the surrounding area follow this link to Olympiaregion Seefeld, where walks and hikes for all abilities and interests are described.  We enjoyed the themed walks with various interesting stopping points and information boards en route.

Here are a few pictures to give you an idea of the country you will encounter in this scenic area.
