What to do between Travels

What to do between Travels

We are currently in a semi-holding pattern until our flights to Portugal in September.  So what to do during this time of waiting.

The last couple of weeks, we have gone over to Biloxi to hang out for a few days.  The Gulf waters aren’t as pretty as the Caribbean, but it was relaxing.   Last trip over to stopped at the Jefferson Davis home, Beauvoir,  to take the tour.

Beauvoir is french for “beautiful view”.  The first lady of named the property Beauvoir when she looks out toward the Gulf and said “What a beautiful view”.

It was quite interesting to hear the stories and walk through the House.

The house wasn’t as large as I had imagined, but quite unique.

Interior walls of the house were painted by artists of the time period to resemble wallpaper.

One piece of furniture, a sideboard, made from marble and finished to look like wood.  This single piece of furniture weighs over 800 lbs.

A lot of damage to the property when Katrina came through years ago.   It took 3 years of refurbishing before it  reopened to the public.  The Main House sits 17 feet upon the ground and the water approached at 20 feet.  Three feet of water flowed through the house during the storm.

Two Cottages

There are two cottages on either side of the main house.   One was the cottage where Jefferson Davis would stay to write his books.   The other was a visitors cottage.  This cottage rents for overnight stays for a mere $250 per night.  It would be different to stay on the ground to stroll through the garden.   There is a large, hurricane proof library/museum located behind the Main House.   It holds many artifacts from that era and a gift shop.

Confederate Graveyard

There is a graveyard on the property containing the bodies of Confederate soldiers and families from that time period.  Upon entering the site, there is an information table full of books containing the names and information on all the graves.

A point of interest, the Confederate statues removed throughout the South are being requested to relocate to the Jefferson Davis.

We enjoying the visit and plan to stop again to take more pictures.

This is a sample of what we are going to do until September.
