Popular Dance forms of Rajasthan

Rajasthan is known for its rich culture and tradition. Dances form an integral part of the Rajasthani lifestyle. As a matter of fact, people of Rajasthan are particularly fond of rejoicing and use dance as an expression of their feelings. Rajasthani folk dances are quite attractive and people of all age groups can participate in the same without any problem. As a matter of fact, Rajasthani folk dances are sought after all across the globe. Some of the well known Rajasthani traditional dance forms are Kalbeliya dance(also known as Snake charmer or sapera dance), Kathputli(puppet), Ghoomar, Chang, Teratali, Bhopa, Kachchhighori, Tejaji, etc.

All these dance forms attract tourists a lot. Rajasthani folk dances originated primarily to entertain the Kings. Folk songs also referred to as ballads are sung when these folk dances are performed. There is a song for each occasion. And Rajasthani songs are rich in emotional content. The style of dancing differs in accordance to the song. Also for each dance form, a different kind of instrument is used. There are different kinds of dance performers which are present in Rajasthan such as Dholis, Nats, Bhopas, Bhaats etc.

Some of the better-known forms of entertainment are:

Ghoomar Dance:

This is a very enthusiastic dance performed by women of Rajasthan especially on auspicious occasions. Women move gracefully in small circles and this looks just spectacular. Bhil tribe basically originated this dance form and now this dance is popular world over.

Gair Ghoomar:

This is another Popular Dance Forms of Bhil tribals which are primarily performed during Holi or Janmashtami festival. It encompasses series of half swirls.

Gair:

This Holi dance is performed by men only. It is called Dandia Gair in Jodhpur and Geendad in Shekhawati. Dhol, dholak and nagada are played during Gair dance performances. Men basically hit the sticks in this dance form in order to create rhythm and this looks amazing.

Chari Dance:

This dance form is popular in Kisherigarh region. It includes dancing with a pot or chari on the head of the dancer. A lighted lamp is put on the pot.

Kachhi Ghodi:

This is a  very lively dance form which encompasses the use of dummy horses. This dance form was performed to entertain the family of the bridegroom. It originated from bandit area of Shekhawati. Men wear elaborate costumes and then they ride on equally well-adorned dummy horses. The dancers hold swords in hands and dance rhythmically to the beating of drums and fifes. Exploits of Bavaria bandits is sung to regale the audience.

Fire Dance:

The Jasnathi tribe of Churu and Bikaner district are known to possess tantric powers. This fire dance is performed as a part of their lifestyle. A large ground is set with live wood as well as charcoal. Then the Jasnathi men and boys jump on this bed of fire on beats of the drum. The tempo of the music rises gradually and finally reaches a crescendo. The dancers appear to be in the state of trance.  The dancers dance as if they are provided with certain kind of divine protection from fire.

Terah Taali:

This dance is performed by Kamad community of Deedwana  and Pokhran in order to offer respect to Baba Ramdeo. A four-stringed instrument known as chau-tara is played by men. Women have dozens of cymbals or manjeeras, tied all across their bodies. They strike the manjeeras which are tied on their body with those in their hands. At times, women even have sword between their teeth. They even put lighted pots on their heads.

Kathputli:

Puppet plays are very popular in Rajasthan. Skilled puppeteer performs various mind blowing acts. Puppeteer is generally accompanied by a woman, in most of the cases his wife. She plays dholak or drum. She also sings the ballad.

Pabuji Ki Phach:

A 14th century folk hero, Pabuji is revered by the Bhopa community. The phad, or scroll, which is about 10 meters long, highlights the life and heroic deed of Pabuji. The Bhopas are invited by villagers to perform in their areas during times of sickness and misfortune. The ballad is sung by the Bhopa as he plays the Ravan-hattha and he is joined by his wife who holds a lamp and illuminates the relevant portions at appropriate points.

So, these are few of the popular dance forms in Rajasthan. Rajasthani culture is not complete without these dance forms.  You will get to see few of these dance forms on your stay in premier properties in the state.
