Indian Etiquettes to Know Before Traveling to India

Every place has its own code of conduct which needs to be followed when you meet people in that particular area. If you do not follow proper Etiquettes you are quite likely to offend people and this will not be in a good taste. Mentioned below is list of few do’s and don’ts to be followed in India.

Don’t shake hands to greet someone

The first etiquette to be followed is to say ‘namaste’ by folding hands and bowing to each other. This is probably the first word you will speak in India while greeting anyone. Indians attach taboos about touching each other, mostly people from the opposite sex. This is the only reason why namaste is a very important etiquette.

Dress appropriately while going out

Dress modestly as people in India have conservative bent of mind. India can be scorching hot, but you will never see someone wearing shorts or a t-shirt. Women are usually from top to toe. Making a habit of sticking to loose and lightweight garments will do well in India. This is an important etiquette because dressing wrongly in public will not be appreciated at any cost.

Stick to work with the right hand

The hands have a special meaning in etiquettes of India. The left hand is always reserved to use the toilet, so it should not be used to touch someone or something. Just stick working with the right hand to be safe. Even if you see people from India having any heated arguments, you will notice that they never seem to be using their left hand. Try to use the right hand and be cool. So using the right hand is an important custom in India.

Never use your feet to touch anything

Not only in one place, but in almost every part of India, you should not use your feet to point at something. This can only happen by accident. People in India avoid putting their feet on the table or chair or on any high surface. And if that happens by mistake, they apologize so that the other person does not feel offended.

So, these are few of the etiquettes which you should follow when in India.
