Memoirs: The Moment That Defined My Wanderlust

My favourite holiday memory is not one I have any photos or video evidence of but one I can recall like it happened yesterday…

Aged 17 with my best friend, Emma, staring out of the window of our high-rise hotel looking down at the busy intersection, just watching the world go by. I always remember this as the moment I fell in love with Travelling. There was something in this moment that ignited a yearning desire to get out there and see the world.

How fitting would watching the world go by make me want to see the world?

As a kid I would only go away every few years and I remember being enamoured with the whole process of flying. Not understanding how a plane worked to researching how to become a pilot. Whilst that is a long forgotten dream, I vowed to make my dreams come true in my 20s by giving myself the world.

Visiting Shanghai in 2007 was a life-changing experience and it was before the days of travelling for  Instagram, travelling to just be ‘seen’ somewhere and travelling because everyone else is. Shanghai was an educational experience as my days were filled with immersing myself in the culture and history. Today, my travel experiences are based around self-care. Although I may be based in one place, I travel to remind myself the world is bigger than my mundane life.

That leads me on nicely why I’d love to go on a Tanzanian Safari. Life is all about doing those ‘once in a lifetime’ things and a safari is something I’ve ALWAYS wanted to do but never got round to doing. With global warming a constant threat, climates changing and animals on the brink of extinction day after day, I want to see nature and experience before it just becomes a mere memory.
