Musings: 5 Reasons You Should Travel Solo

Yep, another listicle type piece on why you should Travel solo but as I’ve now completed my 4th solo trip, I really can’t get enough. So here are 5 reasons why I think you should travel solo.

  1. Challenge yourself

Solo Travelling is all about challenging yourself. Getting yourself around is all on you. There is no one there to hold your hand (unless you meet a sexy stranger), it really is all down to you.

  1. Pace

I use to think travelling was about ticking off every single landmark and point of interest with whoever you’re with just to ‘make the most of it’. But is that really travel? Do you ever really experience it if you’re just ticking it off because you have something to prove to people back home? Travel has no definition and you can choose slow travel or fast travel when you’re travelling solo. Don’t wanna see something? You don’t have to. I like to match the travel type to the destination and in a city I like to be somewhere in the middle and if it’s a beach, I like to take it slow. But the beauty of being alone means your schedule is free for you.

  1. Blending In

When you travel solo, you have a habit of blending in and looking more like an expat or local. This way you’re less likely to get scammed or look like the OBVIOUS tourist than when you’re in a group.

  1. Compromise

When you’re in a group, it’s all about compromise, from the budget to the food to the activities. When you’re solo, the only one you have to compromise with is yourself. Wanna eat noodles all day and splash out on a Michelin starred dinner? You can! It’s all about making plans that align with yourself, your budget and your happiness.

  1. For You

Once I got in the mindset of ‘I’m going to give myself the world’, it really changed my mind on travelling. Too long I kept thinking that I needed someone to come with me, whereas now they’ve become an afterthought. Travel is my form of self care and travelling solo and experiencing the world  is all for me. If you wait around for people, you’ll be waiting forever.
