First Visit to Germany – Practical Travel Tips

Wrapped up with mesmerising landscape and vibrant metropolises, Germany is not only the fourth largest economy on the globe but is as well the powerhouse of timeless tradition and idyllic culture and fascinating history. With the passage of time, the nation has drawn as many fanatic vacationers as it can from all corners of the world. But if you happen to visit the country for the very first time, then here are few valuable advices that you ought to know.

  1. Appropriate Time for Visit:

Since Germany has bitter cold months, it is always pleasant to travel in between April and September. But, spring is the best time of the year, when nature portrays her best. If you are not travelling for studies or any job purpose, you can also choose to visit during the summers; i.e. from June till August. Generally, German summer months have long sunny days with warm temperature. During this period, not only a lot of open air festivals take place but also outdoor activities can be enjoyed.

  1. What to Pack:

If you are planning to travel towards the end of the year, then you need to pack your luggage with lots of thick and warm clothes, because Germany is quite harsh during its winter months. It does not take much for the temperature to fall below -10 degree. As soon as October sets in, the nation starts getting colder and chill, until April arrives. So, pack your bag well.

  1. Language:

It is necessary to have an idea of basic German, before you head for the country. This is so because; English is not predominately spoken all over Germany. In case you can’t remember its pronunciations and words, you can also carry a translator with you.

  1. Punctuality:

While in the country, it is very essential to keep in mind that Germans are quite particular about timing. So, if you have any invitations or professional meetings and appointments, please be on time. First of all avoid arriving late and secondly, even if you arrive before time, wait for the fixed moment.

  1. Visits as Guests:

If any German invites you for dinner or lunch, make sure to carry a small gift. Generally a bottle of wine or a bouquet of flowers is much appreciated. Out there, it is absolutely fine to offer flowers to ladies but if you are in an intimate relationship then go for single red rose. Other then these formalities, shaking hand is another gesture of German culture. Irrespective of gender and age group, Germans love to welcome their guest with hand shake.

  1. Be Mindful of Your Talk:

Germans don’t encourage small talks and silly gossips. Instead, topics such as philosophy and politics interest them much. Since they also don’t like vagueness, always try to be precise and expressive about your discussions. In general, they are quite open minded people who don’t take much time to be a best buddy but when it comes to getting intimated, they should be in a position to trust you.

  1. Eating Habits:

When you are about to dine with a group of German colleagues or friends, do not forget to say “Guten Appetit”, which means “Have a Nice Meal”. And the response to it is, “Danke. Gleichfalls” – meaning “Thanks, You Too”. Furthermore, in Germany, hold you knife by your right hand and your folk by the left hand. Once you are done eating, put both the knife and the folk side by side on the plate. Neither, leave the dining table before everyone finishes eating nor belch. These are treated as bad manners. At the end, thank the host for the meal.

  1. Phone Call Timings:

First of all, don’t call your German friend or colleague after 10:00 PM. Secondly, you should also not call a German family before 10:00 AM. Moreover, if you have to approach any elderly German, don’t call him/her in between 1:00 – 3:00 in the noon. When you answer you call, instead of saying “hello” directly tell your name.
